Recently purchased a 1970 M38A1 CDN3
CFR 70-08669, VIN 10071

Seeking other fellows who may have the same era jeep as I am interested in comparing CFR, VINs and date of delivery.

My jeep is missing the original Canadian data plates and I will need to restamp repros but need to try and figure out DoD.

Hello Chris,

The closest CDN3 number in my data base is:
MD99989
CFR 70-08650
DOD 12/70
Contract: 2ME0 00058

This would approximate your serial as MD100008 and probably a Dec 70 unit but there is the possibility it could have been a Jan 71 unit.

I brought your request for help to the attention of some of our CDN3 owners.

Wes, I have been doing some digging and a friend of mine who has access to the Canadian Forces records tells me that this CFR in the system comes up as entering Canadian service 01 Jan 70.

I am curious as to how many 1970 CDN3s were delivered to us and when they were entered into service. I am wondering whether 01 Jan 70 was an arbitrary date by our guys or not or whether this was one of the first delivered to us under the final contract for CDN3s

I based my estimate on the the serial number I listed. The emailed survey form I received from the owner is saved in my data base and it showed his unit as a 12/70 unit. This unit belongs to 302Trooper.

I'll have to email him and ask which is correct. Confused

Dave (302trooper) cleared that up quickly via email.

The Date of Delivery on the data plate on the dash is the date the jeep was delivered from Kaiser (Willys) Toledo or Kaiser CAN. This is the year of the jeep.

The acquired date is the date of the contract to purchase/produce those jeeps.

So as I posted above:
Quote:

The report provided from the Maple Leaf web site folks on the jeep history (sample below) only contain the following data:
Quote:
MD97585 Data submitted by Dave Chaloux chaloux@persona.ca

CFR No 08318
CFR Year 1967 =67-08318
Serial No 7105-97585
Actual ECC 121202
Authorized ECC 121202
NSN
ERN 30103
Holding Unit 0124
DA Unit 0124
Date Acquired 01-Jan-67 (Contracted for date)
Cost 0
Alloc Code MA
Comm Suite
Current VMO DP356323 - 28-Aug-86
HN Date 02-Feb-88
Pending? No
Disposed? Yes
Disposal Date 25-Sep-87

VMO History for CFR Number : 08318
VMO Type Pending To ECC To AC To HUIC To DA UIC
DP356323 - 28-Aug-86 REGUL No 121202 MA 0124 0124 CFB TORONTO
DP355585 - 07-Jul-86 REGUL No 121202 MD 0124 0124 CFB TORONTO

Last maint entry was 17 Dec 83, with 66527 on the odometer. Work was
conducted by 25 Service Battalion.

Since the data plate DOD date is not listed you must find two serials in the same month that bracket yours and get the DOD date from those two owners. This will confirm your actual date of delivery from Kaiser.

302 trooper

I am interested to know how your data plate is stamped as I require a new set for my jeep.

The "aquired" date makes sense as I had a search of the CF database done and mine too was aquired on 01 Jan 70. Since your CFR is 70-08650 and mine is 70-08669, we are in the same batch. I want to correctly replicate the missing info on a repro set of dataplates.

I think I am getting the "aquired" date and "delivered" date thing mixed up. You staet yours was delivered 12/70 which makes sense.

Further to my last,
I will have to check the MDxxxxx number to see how it coincides. Correct me if I am wrong but this is the same as the engine serial? This should be on a boss on the engine, no?
I have a serial number of 10071 which matches the CFR on the database.

Is it possible that a 0 was dropped, considering yours was serial 99989 or did they only use 5 digits?

No, Willys did not match engine serials to chassis/body serials. The engines during the CDN3 runs were probably about 6,000 or more serials higher than the chassis/body serials.

The date on your data plate will be the date delivered (12/70) not the date acquired.

I have confirmed that indeed my CFR is 70-08669 and the VIN 100071
It was aquired on 01-Jan 70, DOD 12/70 2MEO 00058
Just need to confirm my MD engine number!
Found the original CFR under the replacement decals, it was painted over.
