NOS early M38 24 Volt starter? Open Nose.
Autolite Starter 24 Volt Cranking Type ll
Spec. No. AXS-1851
MFR's No. MBP-4301UT
ORD. No. 7762616
Serial No. 6K221612
Casting Stamp - C95
Casting Stamp - PS-300
Engraved Marking - B3194
Casting Stamp on end of starter - MZ-279
Engraved Marking on end of starter - B3173
Bought at an estate sale in Kansas about 5 years ago and was told it was a starter for an early M38 engine. Maybe you guys will know it's correct application.
Bright shiny Autolight ID Tag looks new. Terminals painted in red. Has Cosmoline on face that matches the bell housing. Never installed or used in anyway. Has some shelf wear but is minimal for a part this old. No idea if it works or not but it should as everything appears correct and new. Plunger pedal works too with nice new gear teeth on engagement gear.
Asking what I paid for it which was $300. plus U.P.S. shipping charge.
I can send you a Paypal invoice and will ship through my business.
If I can get a picture up later today I'll post it.

Great idea Wes, I'll do that.
Does the starter specifications sound correct for the early M38? |

Thanks Wes for that info. I'll have to check which bellhousing I have on my RMC engine. I always assumed being a replacement engine it would be the later bellhousing and this starter would not fit my engine. Not so sure now. |

Oh, OK. Looks like I'll be crawling around the engine tomorrow measuring those bolts. If it will work on my engine I'll probably just keep it for when I eventually go back to 24 volts. Really appreciate the help! |

Good news, bad news.
The NOS early M38 starter is still for sale.
I have the late M38 bellhousing so the NOS starter will not fit. But better for me as I have spare M38A1 parts that can be used to convert the M38 back to 24 volt at minimal cost. Probably cheaper to go back to 24 volt than repair the 12 volt system.
Tomorrow I am taking the starter to my auto electric guy (he is a rebuilder) who I have used since the '70's to give the starter a complete checkout.
Since I have no engine it will fit onto, once it gets a clean bill of health it will be ready to ship.
Looks just like Wes's sample pictures except the Autolite tag is a bright gold color not silver and the text is slightly different. |

I had my early M38 starter bench tested at the rebuilder and it passed as being a good starter to use.
As soon as our never ending rain stops I'll get some pictures posted.
Starter comes with bench testing bill/letterhead from the rebuilder for verification of condition.
Not rebuilt. New Old Stock (NOS) in original paint and finish.
If no one is interested I'll be putting it on Ebay as I can not use it and I'm sure someone somewhere can use it for their restoration.
$300 plus UPS shipping charges. |

I'll make a deal here for anyone interested in my NOS 24 volt early M38 engine starter. $250 plus about $18 for UPS shipping to USA address. Shipping costs may vary.
It is less than I paid for it. The starter needs a new home! |

That's a deal for someone. I just sold a scratched up used one (of unknown working condition) on ebay for $220 less than two weeks ago. |
