I am going to restore my m38a1 and need some parts. I will need guages, top bow , wheels and the manuals to fix everything. Don't want to spend a lot of money cause I don't have a lot. Decatur Illinois area. I forgot I also will need a wiring harness.

When looking for info or help or parts always start with My jeep is __(model)_____, and is ____(stock) or (Modified-in what way)_______. You can also include this info in your signature element that will always appear at the end of each of your posts so you do not have to remember to give all the info people will need to offer the correct help to you.

Stock wheels will run from $50 used to $100 new. The stock wheels were 16 x 4.5 with 5 lugs on 5.5 circle. The correct stock wheel will have an 1/8" hole drilled adjacent to one of the lug holes.

Early A1 wheel.

Late A1 wheel. Originally these also had the safety bead but by the late 60's/70's they started showing up without the safety bead.

How to measure and ID wheel rim

If you are after stock 24V gauges then make sure the gauge you choose matches the sender you have or buy for the oil press, water temp and fuel level. If you would like to save yourself a lot of grief call Kevin Emdee at Star Electric and buy a complete cluster assembly from him ready to install in the dash. kevin.emdee@comcast.net 1-270-877-0813

John at Midwest Military has NOS top bows. http://www.midwestmilitary.net/
The support rods can be fabricated by using WeeBee's drawings http://www.odcloth.com/rodwork.html

Wiring harness can be tough. Choices are slim. A new stock harness will run over $750 for a stock 24V waterproof ignition jeep. Vintage wiring of Maine is the only choice. Other choices are build your own (parts are available) or buy a new old stock (NOS) military vehicle harness for one of the other M series trucks that are more readily available and a lot cheaper, usually under $100. They are simple to modify. Using a NOS harness from another vehicle will also add two more choices to the list for you: the early stock electrical metal connectors made by Douglas or the later rubber connectors made by Packard. Either will work. The rubber was only correct in the very late 60's M38A1's/M170's.

You mention budget limitations but not restoration goals. Knowing your restoration level goals will help folks offer more tailored advice.

As already mentioned above the manuals are free for you to download from our "Downloads" page in PDF format. I sent you a manual list for the A1 and a survey form when I approved your membership. Be sure to use them. A hint on PDF manuals: Once you have downloaded the manuals to your computer also copy them to a memory stick so you can use them anywhere. Then for each manual you download start a three binder and print the cover and the table of contents and put them in your 3 ring binder. Then from now on each time you need to open a page go ahead and print that page/pages and use them on the jeep but file them in the 3 ring binder. Before you know it you will have reasonably complete paper copies of the manuals you use the most. You can now take your time and shop for real bargains on the original issue copies of these manuals at shows, flea markets and auctions.

Midwest Military has new USA made reproduction top bows. NOS are all gone.
I also have the top bow rod kits in stock for both the 38 and the A1.

My jeep is a m38a1 that was shipped to the marine corp division. It will be restored but I won't put a lot of money in it. I bought it for around 1400. The only thing wrong with the body is the fuel tank well that needs to be replaced and the gauges that the glass was broken. Other than that it is almost in perfect shape. I already bought all the brakes and lines and wheel cylinders and master cylinder in a kit for the axles. Going to buy the od green paint. A friend of mine owes me a paint job so that will be free. I also bought new black out tail lights for it. I really don't have much more to buy to restore it. I was told the jeep only had around 3 to 4 thousand miles on it. It came out of Africa brought over by a German family. The body was painted a tan color but wasn't a government paint job because the frame and axles are still the od green. I think it was over there in a lot and never used and sold to civilians. I forgot it was suppose to be a radio jeep because it had the voltmeter on the dash next to the data plates but nothing else hooked up. I hope this explains most of everything.

That answers some. But you need to tell us is it still stock 24 volt waterproof electrics and ignition? Which gauge lens are broken and what are the part numbers on them?

And Army od green (2430) would not be correct for a Marine jeep.

I'm new at this. I'm thinking that you guys can read my mind so I will try to be more specific. I don't have the numbers with me but all the lenses were broken. I think the guy's son got mad at him and broke them. It is a 24 volt system. Will get numbers when I get home. How do you put pictures on here?
