ORD 9 SNL G-740 M38 parts list page 96 Cooling System Group 0503 Nipple, hose, 1/4" P thread. ORD# 7372808, WO# 649720, NSN 4730-00-737-2808. Note this is illustrated in Fig 05-2 as Item F in the water pump but the listing on page 96 says "Head". Just a slight mis-statement but I believe both are the same.

A description of the part:
Quote:
1-NOMINAL PIPE SIZE ACCOMMODATED- 0.250 INCHES 1ST END
2-CONNECTION STYLE- PLAIN (PIPE) 1ST END BEADED HOSE 2ND END
3-NOMINAL THREAD SIZE - 0.250 INCHES 1ST END
4-CONNECTION TYPE - THREADED EXTERNAL PIPE 1ST END UNTHREADED EXTERNAL HOSE 2ND END
5-NOMINAL OVERALL LENGTH-1.310 INCHES
6-NOMINAL INSIDE DIAMETER HOSE ACCOMMODATED -0.580 INCHES 2ND END

Maybe this help:

The water pump and cylinder head of the M38A1 has the same Nipple # 7372808, WO-645905.
See ORD9 SNL G-758,Sept1956, page 109:
2 pcs. Nipple, hose 1/4"-18NF pipe thd x1 1/4"
(cilinder head(1); water pump(1))

I can send a photo or drawing, let me know.
Chris

Andy,

1/4" Pipe US sizing NPT.

Here's a handy PDF document that will keep international pipe threading groups separate and clear in your mind.

https://www.colder.com/Portals/0/Library/Resources/Literature/WhitePapers/Documents/NPT_whitepaper.pdf

It may sound a bit confusing but NPT is American Syandard Taper Pipe Thread.

For example here's the external NPT thread information:

American Standard Taper Pipe External Thread
Nominal size - Actual OD - Threads - Length of engagement - Length of
per inch (tightened by hand) - effective thread
1/8 0.407 27 0.124 3.3 turns 0.260
1⁄4 0.546 18 0.172 3.1 turns 0.401
3/8 0.681 18 0.184 3.3 turns 0.408
1/2 0.850 14 0.248 3.4 turns 0.534
3/4 1.060 14 0.267 3.7 turns 0.546
1 1.327 11.5 0.313 3.6 turns 0.682

Wes, many thanks, again your knowledge has proved invaluable

Any ideas the best way of removing the pieces of the old nipple that are stuck in the thread?

Regards

If all that's left are the old male threads wedged into the female threads then a thread chaser would work. If you have a solid ID of the nipple plus the male threads then a piece of taper square stock steel that will fit tightly in the remaining stub and driven it then turned with a spanner. Pre-soaking with a penetrant goes without saying and often times heat will help.
