I have determined my ignition capacitor/ condenser is faulty. I need a part number (for a parts store like NAPA or O'Reilly or Advance Auto) - a modern part number - for replacing this part. I am supposed to escort veterans in TWO parades tomorrow and I am dead in the water.

Thanks in advance!!! My wife will be checking this forum for me as I am driving down the road to a town with these auto parts stores! Sad

Is the jeep 12 volts or 24 volts?

Try Midwest Military. They are in Minnesota.

Try an AMC 118720. Not positive but I don't think voltage is too critical.

There are two capacitors on those distributors. Either will cause you grief. The radio noise filter is a capacitor and is located in the feed in for wire # 12. It can be eliminated rather than fuss with it just to have it give you grief later.

This noise filter can be eliminated by fabricating the assembly shown below.

Also many a condenser has been blamed for shorting points to ground when the real culprit was the worn nylon insulator on the terminal.

Also it is not uncommon for the neg wire from the coil getting pinched and grounded just before it gets to the point terminal.

The 24 volt distributor condenser part number differs from the civvy 12 volt condensers. Most of the civvy distributors and the MB use the AutoLite 72 or 72S. The 24 distributors use the AutoLite IAU2076L w/o terminal and the IAU3076L w-terminal. This was superseded to IAT3076DS.

Thanks for the help. I did get a condensor from NAPA. They were reasonable sure it would work but somewhat hesitant because of the 24v system and because they had no information on parts specifically for a M38A1, just civvy Willys. At any rate, it worked. It was a $%#$^ getting that small screw back into it bracket. Had to remove the heater core to do it and it still was not easy. At any rate, it worked. I will be purchasing the correct condensor from Midwest Military tomorrow.
