Just had my M38 transmission rebuilt two years ago and yesterday I couldn't find second gear?! Tried backing, rolling, engine off ..everything just refuses to go into second. Any ideas on steps to take to find the fault?

Thanks

Start with the shift forks. Pull the lid and see what is going on. I know I made that sound overly simple but I am assuming you will open the service manual to the right page page before you start wrenching! Wink

Mystery unsolved. Pulled the tower and did a functions check on it, snapped into all gears. Flipped the gears around in the box and the all were free and moved into position. Reassembled and retested, all working properly????? My only guess is some debris must have fowled the gears until I moved them by hand? I plan to flush the box and look for any foreign matter. The rubber boot doesn't really protect the shiftier ball from underneath, only from stuff entering from the cab!

If that is true then you have a civilian cover, tranny top and boot.

Did you check the synchro yellow metal rings/gears for proper action? Did you check your shift fork for proper travel and the ring/fork for unusual wear?
