Does anyone have pictures of the leaf spring shackles. My m38a1 has the solid bolt on the front of the spring and what looks like is a cj2a shackle on the back of the spring. I noticed a 52 m38a1 had the greaseable front bolt and the back shackle had an extra metal piece that connected the top part of the shackle with the bottom part so it looks like the spring wouldn't come apart from the shackle. I need to know what year they started switching them.

All the M38's came with the open type shackles. The M38A1 only came with the open type shackles for the first few months at most. Then they switched to the closed type shackles. Eventually the Army only stocked the newer style closed type shackles.

Just look in your M38A1's ORD 9 SNL G-758 parts manual at figure 16-1 page 274 for the front springs and figure 16-2 page 276 for the rear spring. Then if you look close you will see the plate which is labeled item "T" in fig. 16-1 and item "Q" in fig. 16-2. It is PN 8333259. Now go to group 1601.1 for the front spring and group 1601.3 for the rear spring. They are found on pages 286 and 290 respectively. There you will find the serial number they were introduced in production at.

You can also find these illustrated in your M38A1 Operator's Handbook TM 9-8014 on pages 293 and 295. They are shown as Open type shackle for the M38A1 and closed type shackle for the M170 because the data and photos for the TM 9-8014 were published before the M38A1 updated in production to the closed type.

Photos are in my photo album: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?set_albumName=album87&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php&page=3

You will find several hundred technical photos in my album which if used will answer 9 out of every 10 questions that arise here. Wink
