How do we stake this welting down? Is there a special rivet that gets used? I've got some flat head rivets with a sort of split shank. Are they the right ones? If so, I presume you simply put them in and spread the shank with a screw driver.

Thanks,

Jordan

Welt installation went smoothly. I used a leather awl to punch through the canvas welt. Started in the center and then worked out to each end installing rivets. After rivet insertion, spread the rivet legs with a screw driver, then used standard vice-grips to crimp the rivet. If I had it to do over again, I would have ground off the serrations on the bottom jaw of the vice grips (I was using them upside down and the bottom jaw contacts the head of the rivet). As it is, the serrations on the job tend to marr the rivet head. I wrapped the jaw in duct tape. It helped some, but nor perfect. I'll have to use touch up paint on the rivet heads.

The technique above gave me perfect looking rivet legs.

Other thing I noticed is that the welting is not long enough to rive the last hole. The welting is stretched pretty tight, but it barely covers half of the last hole. I'll have to use adhesive to secure the last few inches of the welting.

That's why I bought welting for a CJ3B, just in case. I had enough for the grill and also enough to the the small sections on the sides of the radiator.

How wide is this supposed to be? I just bought some prepackaged
and it doesn't appear to be very wide.

I think I recall, looking at it in my head, its about 3/4". Don't think its quite an inch. I'm not at home right now to check.
