Steering assy Removal

Hi all!
Summer is winding down and we enjoyed one more summer with great drives with our trusted M38!
I plan to rebuild the steering assembly, how do I go about removing it?

Basically remove the steering wheel. Disconnect the gear box from the frame and the the pitman arm from the drag link and lower the assembly out through the floor from underneath.

Thanks for the .pdf Wes, always to the rescue! I wanted to make sure it comes up through the floor panels and not going out from under the car.


BTW, Earlier today I was trying to locate and download the TM 9-8012 going through the Main Downloads page. Here is the pic:



I clicked the M38 M38A1 M170 M606, and got to this page. Here is the pic:


I might be daft, but could not find the TM 9-8012 in there. What was I doing wrong?

That's not what I said. If it came UP thru the floor for removal then you wouldn't have to remove the steering wheel! It goes down and out for removal and then up and in for re-installation.

Go to downloads then manuals then M38 then you will see the TM you are looking for

Last weekend was working day on the M38 and the time came for removing the steering assy.
I did try to take it Down from Under the car, but it quickly became obvious that in order to do it this way, I would have to disconnect and remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold, disconnect some brake lines from the master cylinder, not to mention also the shaft that drives my mechanical winch.
So into the downloaded TM9-8012 and under Steering Gear Assembly, there it was, on page 276/par.239/ b8 ‘’Remove the steering gear assembly through the passenger compartment, moving the lower end from side to side , as required, to clear the pitman arm as the lower end passes the floor’’
Now parts order time for rebuilding it

I am supper happy that the TM was a big help!

I know that there is a US made sector shaft available now and that is what I would go with unless others here have had experience that dictates otherwise.

Spending a few extra dollars on this part will go a long way.

There are sectors that have know failure issues. So choose wisely or you may wind up out of control on a winding road! Do not buy the repop sector!

I bought an NOS sector shaft from Mullins last year for my M38.

Whow, thanks for the tip guys, I once lived through total brake fluid loss, but the idea of a dead steering wheel is terrifying!

Being overseas I don't buy parts from Europe, because some come from India (Mahindras), so I've been using wcfr4 and latelly Kaiser.

Maybe I should not mention suppliers in the forum, but this is for safety, any Ideas?
