Axe and Shovel for M38

Here is what I do when I don't have rare originals; saw a notch in the shovel blade shank, bend it to the correct angle, and weld it up.
For the axe, thin the handle like WW2 ones; some post war ones are thicker.
Steam or soak in water for 24 hours and put it on the jeep, or better, bend it in a fixture.

Keep an eye out at antique shops, garage and estate sales. All those shovels went somewhere. The Jeepdraw article has a “field” test to determine if the shank has the correct lift.

You’d be surprised what you can find laying around, dirty, rusty, and in one case, covered in concrete.
