I got my engine back from the machine shop with minimal work needed. Now I just need to clean off some minor surface rust, give it a coat of engine primer, then some OD.
Now, I have two crank pulleys. The one on the left is heavier cast and the one on the right came with the engine. Is there a different pulley for the genset set-up? What is the difference between these two pulleys?
The right hand pulley is original to your M38. The parts manuals all the way through the late 50's only show one Willys part number so I don't think there was any change between the M38 and the M38A1 but it could have been introduced after 1955. All of the service manual illustrations thru 1955 show the right pulley as well. The NOS RMC engine posted here a few days ago doesn't offer a very clear shot of the crank pulley but it appears to be the one in the right of your photo.
Soooooooo many little parts needed. I am not looking forward to working on the transmission and transfer case. The oil, grease and surface rust are caked on pretty good.
I opened up my T-90 the other day. The low and reverse gear is worn. Also, the counter shaft gear below is worn. I am guessing that this is a common occurrence with these T-90 transmissions. Now I just need to get some replacement gears and a small parts kit. Does any one have suggestions of where to buy these parts? I am sure they are available at most parts places but someone may know where the best value can be found.
I think you'll find Novak & Advanced Adapters the best choices for quality, correctly hardened gear sets and shafts. The main thing is to insist on US made parts.
I got my T90 taken apart. The first and reverse gear that I bought turned out to be incorrect. I called the guy and he is replacing it. He suggested that I go ahead and replace my 2nd gear. He did not have any but suggested Rapco. My 2nd gear looks fine but I am told that this is a week point in the transmission.
Does anyone have any thoughts on replacing a seamingly good 2nd gear? It looks like they are about $60 new at Rapco.
Many gears are still available as surplus stock - NOS and USA made from vendors.
Also, Mullens had NOS brass synchronizer blocking rings available at a reasonable price. I found there is a huge difference between the construction of NOS and the repro. The NOS are much sharper and defined. I dont know if it will make a difference in shifting but they are so inexpensive its worth having them in your synchro.
When you get a small parts kit it should have a synchro rebuilding set of springs.
The rebuilding guide referenced by Wes and also the video which is about $5 made the rebuild straitforward.
Wes, I have been using that link as my guide for rebuilding. I have also sent a couple of emails regarding the rebuild video with no response.
Tom, I'll take your advice and get some NOS syncro rings. The cluster gear that I picked up is NOS. I fully expected the small parts kit that I ordered to have the syncro rings included. That's what I get for not asking. Replacing the syncro rings was always part of the plan. I had not planned on replacing the 2nd gear as it looks good.
