Actually, the 9" works fine when adjusted correctly, and with the dual master cylinder and remote reservoir, you should be good to go.
I had to drill out at least half of my drum screws. I tried heat and tapping on them and the impact screwdriver. Those tricks worked on a few of them.
Have you downloaded the manuals on this site? If not, go here:

TM 9-8014, starting at page 277 is brake adjusting procedure.

Yup, exactly. I've done all of that as well. I have to go back to Sears and get some new drill bits, unfortunately, as the steel is really, really tough (broke a heavy-duty bit!).
Thanks for the direct link to the manual. I actually bought a copy from militarymanuals two days before joining the site, but it's always great to be pointed to the right place again. (Seems like I do so much research that I need to have a system for keeping track of it all).
These conversations are really helping; it definitely helps motivate me to write the blog and get more advice for where I'm stuck.

Yeah, I started out with a large bit and drilled the screw head off. Then I center punched the screw shank and started with a tiny bit and went up to 3/16" or whatever size, going REAL slow and using cutting fluid. Then I used an Easy Out to get the rest of it out. THEN you can tap on the side lugs on the drum to loosen it. Might want to turn the shoe adjusters in before trying to pull the drum off in case there is a ridge on the drum.
I bought my hardcopy manual back in 1997 from one of the vendors, then bought a cd copy when they came out on ebay, then I found this site back in 2006 and downloaded them again. I keep all of my manuals (military, atv, tractor, car) in one folder on my desktop in separate sub categories - makes it easy for me! Anything I find on the 'net, I keep in its own folder also.
After reading through your blog entries, I got motivated also! I had a couple of guys wanting me to post pictures of my parts Jeep so I can sell it (since I am done with it now), so I went out and took some pics and did a writeup about that on my blog. I've been needing to do that, but with this cold weather, it has been hard to push myself to get out and do it!

I just moved DR's new post on his project here to continue his original project thread.
Wes K
drjmetz's latest update to his project thread.
It's been ages since I've been able to update, but I finally have the ability to provide some news about Porkchop, my M38A1.
As usual, it's two steps forward and a step back (link), but at least I'm encouraged enough to file the paperwork to return him to operational status.
I'm hoping I'll be able to return more often over the next few months. Missed y'all. Smile

I actually updated the blog this evening to reflect new information. Unfortunately it wasn't something as simple as needing a new ignition switch. As it turns out, it needs an entire new wiring harness.

There's still much more work to do, but some friends surprised me this past weekend with
Operation Porkchop, and got him running again.[/url]
