Well I am back again, some nice weather so drug enough things outside that I can get in the shop. Stripped down my steering box and it actually looks pretty good, I think I might just throw some new seals and leave it be. Started stripping the carrier from the rear end down, it was quite easy compared to a lot of things. The carrier itself looks good but man are those planetaries shredded. Have to read up how to get the bearings off now, tried a bit with a punch but they are quite solid. Really hope I can get some parts soon, not much left to take apart :)

been spending some more time with my axles, the planetary assembly carrier from the front is deffinatly shot.
Axle oil seals, there are 4 rear and two front from what I can read in the manual, it says they must be replaced which sounds smart to me, question is how do you get them out? they are smooth faced and sit flat to the mating surface inside from what I can tell. The manual is unhelpful in that all it seems to say is replace them.

If you are referring to seal item # 33 you use a slide hammer type puller with an expanding inner claw set-up.

On your steering box did you review the Ross Manual I loaded on our downloads page?

I believe that is correct, TM 9-1804B page 116 figure 65 parts B & R and page 144 part B. I need to make/ buy ends for my slide hammer, it only has one bearing cup right now. and while the slide hammer would work for the outer ones how would you pull the inner ones? not a lot of room inside the case for that....

I read the manual, haven't done the bench tests yet, mostly wanted to see what was inside, it had a really thick sticky mess in there but at least it didn't smell rancid like the diffs did. The steering wheel is still stuck haven't taken it in yet so it is a bit clunky for doing much with.

The rear axle only has outers. The front axle housing has inners. You drive inners out from the outboard end of the axle tube with a long steel rod or pipe. Same as the pumpkin bearing races at the inboard end of each axle tube.

Well after much rain I got some time in the shop again.
Pulled the rear oil seals no problem found I had a pipe just the right size for the front inner ones. There were no outers on the front... and now not sure if there should have been or not.
Still working at the distributor, think I need a real torch propane just isn't cutting it, been putting penetrating oil on it daily for a couple weeks now.
Pulled the frost plugs out while I was there and found an oddity, someone put a "bushing" in the front for the camshaft would have been bad though as it blocked the oil hole there completely so I think it was the wrong one unless they put it in backwards then a notch would have lined up to the hole.

As Wes said above, only the rear axle has outer seals. There are outboard seals on the front, but they are on the spindles, not the axle. Front inner seals are shown in Fig. 10-3 of the ORD 9 (item B); spindle seals are shown in Fig. 10-4 as item CC.

Was in town yesterday and stopped at a pawnshop, lo I found an "accessory" for my jeep. A genuine 1942 Canadian helmet for a mere $10, they had two but couldn't quite convince the wife that I needed them both.
Not a lot happening on the jeep itself, it has been 30-35 Celsius every day with a humidex pushing it up another 10-15 degrees.

Well as mentioned elsewhere went to a barn find, one of my acquisitions was a lovely tool I believe Wes calls Bertha, the hub puller. I had one hub that was not moving no way no how but Bertha for the win. Makes me want to find other things to use her on  Nice thing with Bertha is the tip that pushes against the axle is larger than the axle so it can't dig in like a modern puller.
I picked up a few other things like a drivers seat frame, a waterproof distributor, .020 over pistons, rebuilt brake shoes, and a box off random goodies. The box is fun it has brand new tie rod ends in it, a number of bearings and seals, a steering box rebuild kit, and the rebuild kit for the steering box to bell crank arm including springs, seats, cotter pins, and dust seals. There are also a few mystery parts but what the heck.

yeah, apparently the guy used to rebuild jeeps and tractors, he has passed away and the kids are selling it all off. There is a cj2a and a ton of parts still there, axles a couple power plants, various small parts, body panels for the 2A etc. The stuff was scattered between about 6 different buildings/ lean-tos.

Well here I am again. The electrician finally showed up so my compressor is going. Took a day but I got my blast cabinet working so I have been having some fun stripping random small parts, primered my first batch today. Makes me feel like I might finally be getting somewhere to have some parts ready to go back on. Just need some fittings to put in a bigger moisture trap, very humid around here and the one I have fills up in 3-4 minutes.

Still having fun blasting away, the new water trap is nice. Curious what other folks use as media in their cabinets? I am using a recycled glass but it breaks down to fine silt pretty quickly.
As a side note that was #@$%@ good paint ford used, it is tougher to get the green up than to get the rust off in a lot of places. I can blast off other layers of paint and leave the green behind.

The snow drifts are melting finally and I can get into my shop, nothing new on the jeep but at the auction last night I picked up a nice older drillpress for $40. That will make things a lot nicer for drilling stuff. Can't wait to get back in there, definatly getting the frame done this year. Not sure if the budget is going to stretch to rebuild the spring and get what I need for the rear axle though.
