I was planning to take my boys out 4 wheeling this weekend and when I went to start up the jeep I was not getting any gas throught the fuel pump so i ran down and picked up a 3lb psi electric pump and bolted it in place, wired it up witha toggle switch and re-routed my gas line. Everything worked fine until I started climbing a long hill and an ATV stalled in front of me. As I sat there and idled on the incline my NEW fuel pump burned up.
QUESTION #! - how reliable is the military fuel pump?
QUESTION #2 - Has anybody had luck with an electtic pump - if so what model?
Question #3 - any idea why my new pump burned up?

QUESTION #! - how reliable is the military fuel pump?
Extremely reliable. The one that failed on you probably had 10 to 20 years on it.
QUESTION #2 - Has anybody had luck with an electtic pump - if so what model?
Any quality top shelf pump will work. Stick with racing performance brands. Use a oil press kill switch so the pump won't run if the engine isn't running. Bank on needing a pressure regulator. Many electric setups require a return line to the tank.
Question #3 - any idea why my new pump burned up?
Probably because you ran it dry. Sitting up hill for a long period your fuel level may have retreated aft enough to uncover the pickup.
Just MHO but I would check your tank for trash. Check your in tank filter for trash, check your tank's pickup line for rusty holes in it and check all fitting for leaks or loose. (Loose will not always show leakage when running but will allow your pump to suck air.
Once you've checked and corrected as needed all the above don't waste anymore money on electrics. Put a quality (new production rubber parts) overhaul kit in your or send it out for a overhaul here:

Wes is an amazing source of information and with all the time he takes we owe him a lot.
It is sad the heat he and others take on these forums when they are all trying to help us out.
Life is short and we all just need to relax. My friend is staring radiation treatments next week.
