New Ross Worm Gear question

Hi everyone!
I’m rebuilding my steering box, new Sector Shaft etc, as well as a new Worm Gear.
After shimming adjustment of the ball bearings, I oiled temporarily the unit and put the Sector Shaft in place, using hand pressure only, (i.e. without the cover on and with the adjusting screw).
I notice that there is some ‘roughness’ when turning the column, and while the Sector Shaft’s pins are shiny and good, the Worm Gear itself is not very smooth or shiny.
I'm afraid that the sector's pins will be damaged while running-in, so shall I very carefully wet-sand the worm by hand, or ‘run-it-in’ using my old Sector Shaft? Or should I mount the new sector shaft and let it ‘run-in’ by itself?
Any ideas?

1st: You should be using the two manuals available for overhauling the steering box. They are free and located in our "Downloads" pages.

2nd: The Ross Manual on page 14 left column par. (a) states the new cam is copper coated for initial service (Run-in).

Yes I've used both manuals thanks to our downloads pages, but missed the brass coated point.

Now the 'cam' you mention I presume is the Worm Gear on the column (pls excuse my English..) and it is great to know it is brass coated, I never thought it, because my new one is just gray in colour!

I overhauled the steering box some time ago, and besides the 'play' when straight. almost everything else was in very good condition and I've always used the Penrite steering fluid.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the 'play' must have been created because back then I had not read about and did not adjust the Stop Bolts at each end, so I am afraid I was pushing the sector pins all the way to the ends of the worm.....

Yes the worm gear is properly labeled a cam in the service manuals.

Copper coated, not brass.

Anything that creates space between the cam and the sector shaft pins will cause play.
