Rebuilding my Dana 44 in my 51 M38. When I disassembled it, where the backing plates attach to the axle tube flange, there are two 1/8" NPT holes that feed into the axle bearing area - presumably for a grease fitting.
In one fitting (on top of the axle tube) I found a zerk lubrication fitting, broken at the neck, and one plug with an Allen head recessed in it. Same both sides.

When I look at the ORD-9 parts catalog, it calls for one hole to be filled with what appears to be a 'zerk' grease fitting (504208), but the second hole is filled with a "#587310 Valve"
Two questions:
1. is there a replacement for the 587310 valve, and
2. is the "broken at the neck" grease fitting I removed possibly the valve and I just don't know it?

What do you recommend in these positions? I assume at least one should be a zerk to periodically lube the axle bearing.

This should help with the lower grease fitting at the outboard end of both rear axle tubes. The Army had trouble with troops over lubing this fitting and blowing seals as well as contaminating brake shoes with grease hence the MWO to remove it since they required a periodic teardown & lube by hand anyway (every 12m miles or each year).




Top opening is a vent & lower opening is for grease fitting that was removed in the service bulletin.

I soaked my "broken zerk" fittings in lacquer thinner overnight, and removed layers of grime and paint. I found, underneath it all, two operable 5 psi axle vents! They cleaned up nice and are set aside for installation after the brake job, and any touch up painting is complete
