M38 horn rod installation

Hi. I have a new horn rod, switch, push button etc but no instructions for fitting them. The rod has a thread at one end, does this go to the switch on the steering box? I’ve seen a diagram but it’s still not clear to me. Also when I drop the rod down the steering shaft it stops at about the top of the steering box, do I need to take the box apart to feed it through or should it easily go through all the way to the switch?

The Switch goes in the end of the steering box I would apply as small amount of Permatex #2 to keep the fluid from seeping out. Then the rod goes into the steering column thru the tube at the bottom of the steering column; with the threaded end towards the top of the column (steering wheel end) and sits on the switch. Next there should be a round "Tee" (Cross section) part that screws onto the rod at the top. Then the rubber button goes on and it should have a metal disk in it.

Once assembled screw the part on the end of the rod for adjustment...

Hope this helps...

Some times it is easier to slip the rod up the tube from switch end.

Gary,

Review my M38 Running gear photo album http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... _album.php

Right about where the B is you will hit a small hole which is very hard to hit dead center with the thin rod flexing so much.

What you were running into about the B above is the top of this skinny tube, item "H". This is why it is sometimes easier to put the rod in from the bottom.

Some of the "How Too" is in TM 9-1804Babout page 157 but not enough. And there is a wee bit of info in the TM 9-8012 page 229 but again not enough.
