I see on of the large vendors on eBay has these listed for an A1... 7697581, wo 674230... it's also in the G740 ORD9....where does it go ?

Dang if I know (but would like to!). The M38 ORD9 page 301 says the quantity is one. The vendor (BMJP) says it's for the floor and glove box on the M38A1. It goes on the back wall of the tool box under the seat. prevents water and gunk getting in the tool box from rear tire splash.

I have sold a few of these and may have a few more.

Well doggonnit! Just went and looked. You're the Man Gary! There is a hole that size in the back of my M38 tool box --- and it's plugged (and painted over) with some kind of gunk, maybe tape or caulk or what's left of the old rotted rubber plug I don't know. Am thankful the metal is sound.

There's an angle brace mostly covering the hole on the inside of the box, so the hole isn't easily seen from inside the box. Very easy to see from the fender well side, I had to be blind to miss it. Am guessing the rubber plug is inserted from the outside (from the fender well side).

If you have and will part with 2, I'd like to buy. Let me know please.

The hole would be in the floor riser panel on both M38 & M38A1.


M38A1: You can see the hole just below the white lettered word "riser".


M38: You can see the hole by the green ?.

Those are being sold by Brent Mullins. He bought out Calvin Ishmael's estate. Calvin had several warehouses in Louisiana of jeeps and NOS jeep parts he collected over 40 + years.

Calvin was a great person to deal with and a good friend.

Looking up the Part Number in the M-38A1 SNL - one plug goes in the glove box drain hole and the other goes in the floor of the tool box on the right side of the tool box.

On the M-38 this plug goes in the floor drain in the tool box.

There are no other places in the SNL that these are used...

What's confusing to me is the description in the M38 ORD9 --- "front floor pan drain plug". If the "floor" is the bottom of the pan then the description is misleading at best because the plug is actually in the rear vertical wall of the "floor pan" several inches off the floor.

The M38 tool box would have to be nearly full of water for anything to drain out of that hole. Gary's description that the plug is to keep crud from rear wheel splashing into the hole makes sense to me....but it sure makes me wonder why they put the hole there to start with? Why didn't they put it into the bottom of the floor? Maybe I'm missing something. Either way, another great parts mystery is solved!

yes, sometimes he had a high price on stuff. I have found that some of those older guys that used to buy and sell this stuff had a few things that were rare and special to them.

I tried to get a NOS m38 jeep steering wheel from Phil Nelson, but a $1000 back in 2004 was too much.

There used to be several around like Leo Porter and a few others I cannot think of the name right at the moment, but most all of them are gone now.

They did not have websites and I would call them up and a few times they sent me parts and told me if I didn't like the part to send it back and if I did, just pay after I received it. They all liked to talk a lot and tell stories of when they would buy surplus jeeps, engines, etc. by the dozens.

I just bought 4 today... 3 for jeeps, 1 for spare...

The hole at the back of the toolbox where ther drain is, should be covered with the sloped portion and allows the toolbox lid to drain.

There should be no other holes in the splash panel other than for the fuel lines.

There should be a hole in the bottom of the tool box to drain it, this is where the plug goes...

I am going off my M-38CDN which was untouched in that area... And on the M-38A1 i am working on now is original in that area...

1 - 1st sentence above: What are you referring to with "covered with the sloped portion"?

2 - 2nd sentence above: Does your "Splash Panel" reference what is actually called the floor riser?

3 - 3rd sentence above: "should be a hole in the bottom of the tool box" did you find one?

The sloped portion I am referring to is inside the tool box and is the drain for the tool box lid area (Where the tool box lid sits in the lowered portion of the top of tool box).

Here's some photo's of mine (M38) to maybe help sort this out.

The drain hole in the rear of the lid seal channel (seal removed), an inside shot of the diagonal brace-bracket that leads from the seal drain hole to the rear riser drain hole, and a photo of the only hole I can find in my tool box floor pan (occupied by a body bolt that goes through the hat channel).

I can find no evidence of a drain hole in my tool box floor, but don't know if the metal is original or not. Maybe the tool box floor drain was a Tech Bulletin (TB) or Modification Work Order (MWO) issued after production? Or perhaps only on CDN models?

If my floor is a repair-replacement and a PO forgot the drain hole, perhaps somebody can provide a photo and measurements to locate it? I'd sure like to put one in...it sure seems like there ought to be a drain.




Looks like I need some primer and paint inside the top of the tool box because of a sloppy painter.....
I also ordered a pair of rubber plugs from BMJP.
