I picked up a motor to replace the one in my 1960 F-Head.

Nothing is never that easy,it’s an F-head engine but apparently not originally designed for my M38A1.

It has a FMC data plate on the left side of the block with a serial number and the other numbers are as follows

Block number above the waterpump pad - RMD119358

Block casting number located bottom right

SD 807895 14

It has a cogged belt pulley attached to the crankshaft belt pulleys.

Anybody have any ideas ?

;replacement' engine (new from Willys Factory) for M38A1 Applications.

I'll try to find what vintage the 119538 would be from.

Why do you say it was not designed for your Willys?

That engine is definitely made for your M38A1. Don't let the cogged belt throw you. Just get rid of the pully, and install a new two groove one. They are easy to get and are being made new.

The cogged pulley attached to the double grooved pulley and there is an adapter plate attached to the back where the transmission bell housing would bolt up to,does not match the bolt pattern of my M38A1 or NEKAF.

If it was a replacement would it not have a plate attached from the depot?

The original engine has one but its in Dutch and they also change the paint color to a light green when they replace their depot motors.

The RMD stamp on the engine pad does not match up to the numbers I find on the web that designate M38A1 use ?

It has a 12 volt distributor etc,I am not doubting the block and head will not work and I can transfer all of the 24 volt systems over etc.

With the adapter plate on the back I am thinking it was set up to power some other equipment other then the jeep,it is painted the green originally so it was used military wise.

just one of those curiosity things that kinda nags one,the adapter plate may be useful to somebody somewhere.

Thanks everybody for the reply’s. Richard

It was quite common for the Army to utilize it's stock of spare brand new RMD engines on their F134 powered compressors, large generator sets and etc. as well as for the M38A1 F134 replacements.

Image All F134's were serialed in order as produced. When they were built up on the production floor for installation in their assigned unit the prefix was added for U (utility), T (Truck) or MD (M38A1/M170) or RMD if part of contracted spares group for the Army. If you review enough RMDXXXXX serials you will see that they are spread all over the spectrum.

As an RMDXXXXX block it would have originally left Willys set-up for 24 Volt accessories. The 12 Volt distributor could have been put on it at anytime after it left the Army's stock shelf.

Very likely.

I just checked my NEKAF database and did not find any engine starting with MD11953*.

However, the following original engines were installed in NEKAF-jeeps from 1960
MD17959 1960 KR-54-69 NL motornr. MD119559
MD18009 1960 ******* NL motornr. MD119522
MD18039 1960 KR-57-98 NL motornr. MD119543

I also found 6 RMD stamped engines and their numbers start with RMD103*** and RMD109***.

(R)MD119358 also seems to be from 1960 (assuming the R was added later)

MD17883 1960 motornr. MD119294
MD17931 1960 motornr. MD119519

RMD was the standard Willys/Kaiser prefix for all their factory new replacement engines. The R was not an additional prefix letter added later. Factory new replacement engines did not get installed in any jeep at the factory. They were contracted for by the Army for spare engine support and were delivered as a stand alone engine directly to the Army in a crate.

As I said in March all F134's were produced in serial sequence and when their final factory assignment was known the appropriate prefix was stamped on the serial. It is entirely possible for adjacent serial numbers to have different prefixes IE 4J119357 just before RMD119358. Prefixes in these examples were inserted as a set 4JXXXXXX and RMDXXXXXX. It is just as possible for RMD119358 to be followed by 12 more RMD1193XX engines then MD119371 thru MD119385 to show up.

Hi Wes,

You wrote: "It is just as possible for RMD119358 to be followed by 12 more RMD1193XX engines then MD119371 thru MD119385 to show up." I just found some hard proof. See the numbers below.
However, factory new replacement engines did also get installed at the factory.
The RMD numbers of these NEKAF-jeeps are even stamped on the original data plates.
MD10010 1955 motornr. MD103407
MD10032 1955 motornr. RMD103529
MD10047 1955 motornr. RMD103488
MD10093 1955 motornr. RMD103923
MD10125 1955 motornr. MD103797

RMD engines were not installed at Willys/Kaiser USA factories. Possibly in Holland in your NEKAF's.

The original engine that in in this one now is the Dutch light green color but is locked up,I bought a replacement engine to use temporary as I rebuild the original.

I figured the one I bought had came out of another Jeep as listed,I have to swap everything over but it bench ran and for the $200 I paid for it it should be okay.

It was the numbers that threw me off when I searched it.

Thanks

Richard
