On the M-38A1 the rear view mirror bracket for the windshield that MWM sells, is an optional item for the M-38A1, I understand.

I ordered the rear view mirror and it appears to have come with a small bracket (Separate from the mirror, not in the box).

My question is how is this normally mounted, I think it goes as follows Triangular bracket mounts single hole to top of the windshield and rear view mirror and mount bolts to the base of the triangle bracket (holes fit).

If you take this bracket and make the bracket a little bit wider and place the two holes at the base 1 15/16” – 2” apart and change the ΒΌ-20x X bolts on the hood catch to a longer bolt and it will fit there.

Please advise on how it should mount.

Thanks

I used a side-view mirror and made a s-shape bracket and then used a longer bolt for the hood catch and affixed the bracket to the windshield with a nut (I just used a single bolt).

They were not an option on the M38A1's. They are of little use with the windshield folded or the small rear window canvas or arctic tops installed. In the real world you can try and ad anything to anything. They are not offered on the civvy CJ5 or CJ6 either. So if the one you have came without instructions and the CJ5 & M38A1 manuals do not mention them perhaps it would be more expeditious to post a photo of your center windshield mounted mirror and the bracket it came with and perhaps one of us can offer some help.

My 1960 CJ5 plow jeep with the ventilating windshield had a bubba installed rear view mirror.

Wes, the bracket that Midwest Military sells is very similar to your mount shown. That is how I figured it would go. On the back end of the bolts that hold the hood catch to the windshield. Then the mirror would fit without interfering with the straps and all.

However the bracket that MWM sells is NOT wide enough to fit on the bolts.

I am now thinking of making my own mount using the one from MWM as a pattern.

WIll advise.

UPDATE: Talked to John at MWM today. The Rearview mirror mounts on the tube of the windshield such that the bracket does not touch the roof and to the side of the windshield hold down strap. Holes need to be drilled in the tube portion of the windshield to mount the bracket. Per John there was a maintenance order to do this.

On my M-38A1; I filed the sides of the bracket and notched it so that it fits between the bolts that hold the hood latch on and then added 2 1/4"-20 nuts to hold it in place. It works and is very similar to Wes' photo above.

On the M-38 you mount it by drilling holes and mounting it.

Been looking for the Modification Work Order or Technical Bulletin about the windshield mirror with no joy so far. Can anybody point to one?

No doubt that mirror is important for driving safety. I'm using one from a 1950 Chevy truck mounted to a magnet (no drilling holes required). Would be interested in seeing that Army order about it.

Thanks!

I used the M151 mount with offset round mirror, sets it a little lower.
on a side note that mirror mount in Wes' picture was on my first M38 windshield ...
