a known failure point, if not on your regular maintenance schedule (i'm guilty) is the starter switch. I noticed gradual performance degradation on my starts and found burned contact points in the switch. cleaned up with contact cleaner and soft wire brush, performance restored.

Thanks Rick.
I've noticed on mine that if it sits for a while it takes a number of times stepping on it before it starts to work. My guess is that the dampness of where it is - ambient air moisture - is causing some corrosion to build up on the contacts when it's not in regular use. That gets rubbed off when I start it up again and start using it regularly.
I haven't pulled the starter switch out to look at it but is that a fairly simple process/project?
My jeep sits in the garage of my family's house near the beach so I think the moisture from the air is causing the corrosion. In the Winter it's in the garage in an enclosed bag with dehumidifier bags to keep the air dry.

4 screws secure the switch to the starter. start to finish less than 1hr maintenance. I had one weld up and grenade a few years back-not pretty.
