Both the L134 & the F134 engines have a serious problem maintaining their serial numbers because when the block upper surface is decked (shaved) the numbers are usually obliterated. Often, when this happened the machine shop would restamp all or part of the serial number back above the water pump. Also Willys often had a tendency to use a lighter stamping of the prefixes. All M38's left Willys factory with an MCXXXXX serial there. Willys also produced spare engines in separate lots under US contracts and these spare engines had a RMCXXXXX serial. The serial on the tag behind the passenger seat indicates your M38 is a late June or early July 1951 M38. Do you have a dash serial plate?

That stamping was not done by Willys. The block has had it's top deck machined and someone restamped the serial in the field leaving off the prefix.




The MC and the 25359 are original Willys stampings. The 38 and the two dots are not done by Willys.
