On page 296 of the M38 ORD9 in Section 1804.1 Body Panels, Pillars, Sills, and Molding is a part listed as Strainer, body left side panel to wheelhouse, WO-673469.

Searched the forum and the interweb with no joy.

Can anybody help identify this part?

Thanks!

The only "strainer" I can think of one the left side is the gas tank filler neck strainer, but that's covered on section 0306.

could this "strainer" actually be the rock guard protecting the trailer plug wiring?

Rick,
I don't think so.
Pretty sure that rock guard panel is listed on page 324 in the ORD9 as GUARD, taillight and trailer connection w/weld nuts assembly, G740-7372884, WO-674239.

Out of curiosity I checked the ORD9 for the M38A1 and found STRAINER, inner rear body panel to frame (2ea.), WO-663079 on page 326.
Different part number than the M38 and a slightly different description with quantity of 2 instead of 1 on the M38.

Not sure they're related purpose or not, but sure sound like it.

might be a reenforcement plate or mounting plate. something to take the "strain " off something?

Hi Gary,
I thought about that name as well --- "strainer" --- but if Willys named it that --- assuming it's actually some sort of bracket, or reinforcement, or tapping plate, or some such --- then they sure deviated from what they normally name things like that?

I've looked at everything on my M38 that's attached to the left side body panel to the wheelhouse and nothing not already accounted for in the ORD9 jumps out at me.

Maybe my "strainer" is missing (or staring me in the face and I can't see it).

Usually in the ORD9 when a part comes welded to another part they say so in the description.
Maybe they forgot to add that note?
Perhaps that's why I can't "see" it.

I'm hoping the gentleman member of the forum that has access to the Willys factory engineering drawing collection might take a look and see if he has one for this part number.

Is it the "r" shaped hat channel inside the left wheelhouse?

Hi Bob,
I think that's a pretty good bet.

I've been looking in the ORD9 and maintenance manuals for "hat channels" and they don't appear to be listed as separate parts in the ORD9 --- which tells me they came welded to other parts and the Army never intended or authorized them to be replaced separately.

Except for maybe this "strainer" because it is listed in the ORD9.

It seems hat channels as separate parts came about from demand in the after market or restoration hobby?
It's curious that hat channels don't come pre-welded to repop replacement floor panels (etc.) as Willys originally produced them.

I wonder if the Army would've described hat channels as "Strainers" if they had been authorized as separate parts and listed in the ORD9.

Just my s.w.a.g. 2 cents.
