trailer chains

Are the safety chains for the M100 longer than the chains on other 1/4 ton trailers. I was told that they were and they hooked onto the rear lifting shackles. Is this true?

The original M100 safety chains are very similar to the WWII 1/4-ton trailers (the chains and hooks on both trailers look identical to me but they have different part numbers). The longer chains with the big curvy hooks were made for the M416/M762 trailers.

I would also like to know where they hook. I checked the manuals for a chain plate like the M151 has, but didn't see one. Right now I am just pulling my M100 behind my pickup. I bought one of those raised pintle mounts from Tractor Supply which makes the pintle about 9" away from the receiver chain hook points. I think I am going to make my own chain plate to mount behind my pintle on the truck, but what about the A1?

Yes the post WWII Willys/Kaiser jeeps came without chain eyes or plates. Yes the M100 trailer and M416 trailer had their chains connected to the rear lifting shackles of these jeeps. Yes, guys who tow a lot with their M38's, M38A1's and m170's use eyes or M151 plates.

Thanks Wes! Since my 'A1 isn't finished, I haven't hooked the trailer up to it yet - those chains didn't look like they were that long, but I guess the 'A1 isn't that wide either!. I'll fab up an M151 style chain plate for my truck pintle. I had a friend that was close to being decapitated (and her new Accord was totaled) by a wayward boat and trailer (whose owner didn't connect the chains) about 5 yrs ago. Needless to say, I always try every way I can to hook up the chains safely before I pull a trailer! Right now I am using a chain wrapped around the hitch shaft and bolted together, with the trailer chains attached to that - not pretty or the best way, but better than nothing!
