M-38 Accelerator pedal linkage question...

Gentlemen:

Can someone explain to me how the accelerator pedal pushrod interfaces with the linkage on the back of the block. The linkage on the back side of the block (on my jeep) has a black rubber donut. My accelerator pedal has been bastardized and so I am not sure about reassembly of the whole apparatus. Is the pushrod on the pedal supposed to be ball-shaped at the end so that it fits into the hole in the center of rubber donut on the linkage which is bolted to the block? If so, then what keeps the pushrod securely affixed to the block linkage?

In other words, how does the pedal push-rod connect to the linkage on the rear of the block. I've looked at photos but still uncertain.

Thanks,

Jordan

The rubber doughnut is a snap fit on the short rod from the petal. The short rod has a ball on each end, one is permanent in the metal petal and the other goes into the rubber. The bottom of the doughnut has a small machine screw and nut that bolts the rubber to the lever assembly on the rear of the block. My original one had a steel round holder for the rubber which was gone, so I'm not sure on that type. I got a new one from Midwest Military. The flat fender M38 is the only Jeep I've seen that uses it. The CJ's and M38A1 are all different. John

The M38 was designed for relatively quick powerplant changes - the snap fit of the throttle linkage meant one less bolt to take apart in an inaccessible area.

Tacking on an old thread here.......

Unless I missed something, the Manual shows a single nut and washer to mount the donut to the linkage, and that's what I did.

I highly recommend using a lock-nut, a double-nut, lock-tite, and/or all three on it.

I always thought it'd be the ball end of the rod popping out of the donut and leaving my pedal dead........
