Latest offering from Google. I remember someone posted a photo a while back of an M38A1 with this set-up, but this is the first time I've seen it on the M38:

hmm interesting.

I wonder if the sapper in the passenger seat would be wearing the headphones. Seems to be a pretty short distance from the body of the detector to the trail wheel, and almost no coverage before the front wheels would hit the mine. Sketchy indeed, and nothing but your helmet for protection.

The exposed troop is watching for anything that may snag the detector and damage the rigging. I would guess they have the detector on speaker in the dash for monitoring. If they were going to sweep the road in front of the jeep instead of the ditch they would not need the observer standing outside the jeep and the detector would be further ahead of the jeep due to the change in angle of the rigging arms. The methods were much the same on the M38, M38A1 and M151 which I have seen equipped for this task.

Why would the spare tire be mtd on the side on this particular unit?

I would guess because the mount bracket for hauling that detector long distances with the jeep are on the rear of the jeep.
