fording valve open or closed?

How can I tell which way the fording valves are open or closed? my cables were never there and I dont know which way to leave the valves so the crankcase is not pressurized?
If I remember correctly, when the lever is in line with the valve = open
Lever is perpindicular to the valve = closed.
