I am going to ask to some what may be a foolish question...

Can a 12 volt starter be converted to 24 volt?

I currently have a 12 volt civilian starter in my M-38 running off one battery, the rest of the jeep is 24 volt down to the lights and generator / regulator.

I am 6' 4" and getting to the starter pedal is tight for me (also the 24v starter needs rebuild). So months ago I installed the 12 volt starter with a pushbutton start switch under the dash, easily accessable but out of sight, sort of.

What I want to do is upgrade the starter to 24v and keep the pushbutton start. I will leave the floor pedal there but it will not be useable.

Anyone done this mod or seen it done...

Thanks in advance...

Hal,
With enough money anyone can make anything work. It stands to reason that if an auto electric shop can rewind an armature or field from 6 to 12 that it can be done from 12 to 24. It also stands to reason that if one can run a 6 volt starter in a 12 volt system trouble free for 15 years or so you should be able to run your 12 volt starter in a 24 volt system. Since you need to have the 12 volt starter rewound and modified to 24 volt give it a shot now at 24 volt. If it works ok then run it a while.
