I have the original style Cuno oil filter - unfortunately it's leaking from the T handle on top and at the bowl gasket. I could make a new gasket, but am wondering if there are any new ones being sold out there?? And as far as the T handle goes, can it be repaired or do I need a new head?? I've opened it up to clean it and it looks like the head assembly (with discs) is riveted together? Maybe I'm missing something. I don't want to remove the filter and install a modern throw-away style - but that may be the best option. Suggestions?
The Cuno filter has been with us since the 1920's. It is still installed as new equipment on OEM installation of a lot of hydraulic equipment. They are good filters and do a good job. Just as good as the military junior partial flow cannister system. You should be driving the jeep at least once a week unless it is in long term storage and pickled. You rotate the handle 360 deg once each week.
The bowl gasket can be tricky if you don't understand how it fits the lid.
The gasket (4) fits in the groove in the head (1) and the bowl (2) must have it's curved upper edge centered on the gasket. The backup plate (3) has enough give to let the bowl shift sideways enough for the lip of the bowl to get wedged under the metal edge of the head (1).
Also that nut on top under the "T" handle is called a packing nut and you must tighten it a little now and then to squash the seal enough to seal the stem of the "T" handle.
This is the gasket drawing. _________________ Wes K

Midwest Military sold the head assy's. They may have the gaskets.
