Has anyone got information about the bumper rope we all talk about. Was it standard equipment on most, all or very few of the M38s. What diameter? Was there an "eye" splice on both ends? What was the length from top of eye to top of eye? I assume the rope was hemp or sisal, which? Like several other items, was it just what the receiving unit decided?
It was a unit issue item from stores. Had loops on each end and was primarily a WWII thing. You still saw several now and again after the big war but that quickly faded out. There's an excellant writeup on the assembly of one in the AAW volume 1 page 141. _________________ Wes K

As yet another option, I ordered 30 feet of 1 inch diameter manila rope from the McMaster-Carr website (P/N: 3825T36, $19.23 before shipping) and spliced eyes on each end. Splicing eyes on each end was not difficult at all. Just do an internet search on 'rope eye splice' and you'll find numerous sites that explain how it's done. Practice first on some 3-strand 1/2 nylon rope and you'll be an expert in 10 minutes. And it's fun. (Make sure you tape the ends of each of the 3 strands while you're doing the weaving of the rope.)
