I am sure this has probably already been beat to death but is there a battery that is the same or very similar in size to the 2HN? I found some new manufacture ones at $165 each, I found that to be extremely expensive. Are these batteries still used today in something that the military uses ie. Hummers, Deuces, 5-tons? Anyone know of a way to get one if they are still using them?

The 2HN Battery is still being produced, it is used in a multitude of Military equipment... The problem is that Homeland Defense has made it so that any military material cannot be sold to the public: unless the manufacture can and will track that item thru 3 owners... I got this from a VP at Exide after a call to their consumer hotline complaining that their local office refused to sell to me...
Last I heard Star Electric had a limited supply of batteries so check with them...
As for suitable subs you will just have to shop around to find one that fits, unless Homeland Defense changes their ruling...
When I bought mine I wish I had bought a couple of spares....

I believe the Group 56 will work although it's too wide for the tray. I ran them for years in my M38A1. I plan on using them in my M38 as wll. The military 2HN is 10 1/4" long, 5 5/16" wide, and 9" high. If you set the battery so the row of 6 caps are closer to you than the two posts the negative post will be on your right. She's rated 12 volts 45 Amp-hour. The closest civvy replacement is a 22NF. ( 9 7/16"z long, 5 1/2" wide and 8 15/16" high.) _________________ Wes K

Wes, what are the dimensions of the Group 56 batteries, is that different than the 22NF or is that one-in-the-same? It really doesn't matter to me if it doesn't look right, it just needs to function correctly. Also, about the orientation of the vent/fill caps, I think you are talking about the M38 I am trying to find them for an M38A1.

The orientation of the top of the 2HN battery is the same no matter what jeep you put it in. The positioning discription I gave was for the battery and you, not you and the jeep with a battery in it. When subsituting battery models you must not only get the measurements close you must keep the positive and negative terminal relationship the same. So when I said sit the battery in front of you on a table and position it with the vent caps closer to you than the terminal posts. This will put the negative post to your right. Now any other model battery you select must appear exactly the same when when so positioned in front of you.
Sears has a good replacement battery that fits really nice in the A1 battery box, so I don't think a problem would exist for the M38. Just bring a 2HN or dimensions and they should be able to get you the right battery. The connections are correct but the battery height maybe a little higher if I remember correctly. This won't interfer with the cover at all.
I went to CarQuest and bought two 51R-60 batteries, 550 cranking amps. The "R" means reversed posts, so the batteries will match the original 2HN and all the cables will work. They fit the trays nicely in my M38A1.
I also saw the 51R at Wal-Mart. Price at CarQuest was $137 which included $10 deposit since I did not have two old batteries to turn in. _________________ David Mohr
