Which end of the rear drive shaft attaches to the brake drum.
Is it the yoke part that has the grease ftting?
That is the way I have it connected. But when it turns, the yoke hits the metal part of the ajoinng yoke. I thought when I put the tub on that the weight of the tub would lower the angle of the shaft allowing some space between the yoke pieces.
But it did not. So what to do here?

Ken

Ken,
Was this joint functioning correctly before you disasembled it? There are two different flanges that bolt to the brake drum. One has the distance of 1 3/8" from the face of the drum to the center of the caran joint and the other has 1.685" for the same distance. The taller one allows 28 degrees of angularity between the sliding yoke end ears and the drum and the earlier only allows 18 degrees.

Yes, it was working good before disassembly. That is the sliding yoke on that end in your photo isn't it?
After I got the engine to run and before putting the tub on (that was a couple months ago), I put jack stands under the axles to get the wheels off the floor. While engine was idling I put the transmission in forward and reverse to test my work. That is when I noticed the knocking in the drive shaft. So I inspected the area and saw where the yoke ear was hitting the ajoining yoke on the drum.

I have since installed the tub, but haven't run it like I did before yet.
I have Examined the angle of the u-joint/shaft, it appears that it still may knock.

I will take a measurement anyway to see what I have.

Ok I measureed the height of the yoke that is attached to the drum and best I can see it is 1-3/8".
I'll go take a picture of it.

Yes the sliding yokes front and rear shafts attach to the transfer case.

With the short flange the problem you have is normal and will go away when she is at normal operating weight on her wheels. If you want more clearance anyway you only need to install the later flange. Just order one for a M38A1 or CJ5.

Ok thanks Wes, We'll see how it performs once everything is installed and I drive it around.
