Hope I haven't stumped everyone? The reason I ask is because with the top picture which is what I'm thinking is original to the m38 transfer case, I don't see how to attach a parking brake backing plate like on my other transfer case pic below...

Your M38 manuals and IPL will tell the answer.

The top one came off a vehicle with a rear axle parking brake.

Just out of curiosity.....are the hole patterns the same on the two retainers......any possibility they could be interchangeable?

Might want to verify the bolt lengths that attach it and the backing plate to the case......it looks like the one for the rear-axle parking brake is machined down a bit while the other retainer is not.....unless its just an optic dillusion in the pics. I don't remember when I rebuilt my xfer case if the mounting holes are open all the way into the case or if they are stop short of penetrating into the case. Just looks like one of those places where caution is warranted.

I would be interested to know if they interchange as I have a trans/transfer case I want to put in but doesn't have the anchor point for e-brake. My current case is broken where the rubber mount goes.
