I got my M170 running again after installing a take-out coil supplied by John Bizal at Midwest Military (Thanks John!).

It cranked up, but in an ugly way.

Seemed like it was firing on 1 or 2 cylinders and burning oil. Normally, it will run on all cylinders, burn oil for 5 minutes and then be OK.

Today, it ran really rough. I ran it for about 10 minutes, and when I got out, there was a puddle of fuel and oil under the engine. It all looked like it was coming from the lower 1/2 of the fuel pump. There is a buildup of grease and oil on the headpipe, too. First time I noticed this as well.

****UPDATE****
I changed the oil. There were around 8 quarts of oil in the rig!!! No wonder it was burning oil and leaking!

Did a compression test on the four cylinders and got the following reads:

#1: 120psi
#2: 110psi
#3: 110psi
#4: 90psi

Double checked all the head studs for 65# torque and they were A-OK.

Put in 4.5 quarts of fresh 10w30 and rechecked the condenser point gap. Adjusted the timing a little and the rough running stopped.

I am going to check the valves and also the head gasket to see if that can explain the drop on #4.

Still runs kind of weakly. When I hit the gas, it takes a couple of seconds for the engine to catch up.

When the fuel pump diaphrams fail they allow what was on one side of the diaphram to move to the other. In the case of the lower diaphram it allows fuel to flow into the crankcase or oil to flow into the pump depending on the differential pressures involved. 8 quarts of oil in a 4 quart sump is usually caused by this diaphram allowing fuel to move to the crankcase. Not only does this increase the sump's volume, it also dilutes the oil and the oil rapidly looses it's ability to lube the engine. Your most important next move is to fix the pump. Either buy a kit or a rebuilt exchange pump from http://www.midwestmil.com/ or http://www.then-now.com/
