When I got my M38, the engine was out of it and the block was mostly stripped. The Crancase Ventelation system was gone and the nipple in the side of the intake manifold was broken off. I ordered a new PCV valve and tubing, removed the broken nipple, and check the book to see for sure how it went back together. I noticed that the book and the parts catalog show a control valve part# 7372752 installed. I am abale to place the PCV valve directly into the manifold and run the tubing to the cone on the valve cover. What is the funcction of the control valve and is it necessary?

I also have a couple of Cuno oil filter questions. From where does the line run that carries oil from the engine to the filter? I see where the out-put line goes and have that one, however, I don't see the other one. Also, is this Cuno filter a good system? I took it apart and it appears that the alternating plates turn as opposed to the stationary ones. The stationary ones (if I understand how it works) have been twisted away from the post that holds them so all of them turn together.

Several of more questions! I have an early style starter (my engine is an earlier one) but I cant locate the forward mounting bracket. I looked for one in the parts catalog but don't find one listed. Do they even use them? The starter seems to be firmly mounted with the two mounting bolts. I assume that I can make one, however, I am trying not to fabricate parts.

The carborator that I found in the box of parts when I got the jeep is a Carter YF. Any idea what it goes to?

Finally, I attempted to add a picture of the PCV system on my jeep but couldn't figure out how to do it. Any advice?

Thanks, Steve H

After I posted this message, I noticed the FAQ link and found the info on posting photos. I also checked my message and noted that my spelling is a bit shakey!

Steve to answer your question on the Cuno oil filter...

The line into the Cuno goes from just in front of the fuel pump to the Cuno. It is a flexible rubber hose... The output comes from the Cuno to the timing gear cover... Both hoses are available from the different MV vendors...

BTW, it is recommended to replace the gasket when taking the Cuno apart... Just wash it in Solvent and let dry... Dry Cleaning fluid is recommended per the TM, but any clean solvent should work...

As for the rear bracket on the starter, check with the MV vendors, they may have it aready made...

The YF carb is for an "F" head engine and M-38A1, you will need to find a YS-637 Carb for the M-38 with a "L" head engine...

Hope this helps...

It is part of the deep water fording system. It can be deleted but you must be carefull what parts you delete and what parts you keep ti insure the integrity of the engine PVC system and the wiper vacuum system.
You should spend some time reviewing Bob W's early vs late vent system article at his web site. You should pick the system diagram you wish to use and then we can discuss precise modification steps to kepp everything working ok.

Another good site to peruse is Binky's
http://home.comcast.net/~sday77/binky/index.htm
You'll find the explanation of the PCV system there in the repair section.

The Cuno has been used for 70 years or so. It works just fine and traps about the same amount of trash that the partial flow military junior filter does. The only problem with the Cuno is you must operate it once a day. That means each day open the hood and turn the handle one full turn. This dumps the trash in the filter's sump where it will stay untill you remove the bowl at each oil change and clean it. This filter was original to all the M38 production and the first two months of M38A1 production. Over the years the Army converted the older vehicles to the military junior to ease the burden on the logistics system and of course avoid the innattention often causing it to not function properly. The pressure side hose fitting is well hidden behind the fuel pump. It's an 1/8" Pipe threaded hole in the left main oil gallery.
The plug just below the fuel pump opening in this photo gets the 90 degree adapter to which the pressure hose fastens and then the hose goes up through the grommetted hole in the filter bracket above the water pump and then to the filter.

Yes they are needed to lessen the load on the mount bolts. It is called a "Support, mounting WO# 649073 and ORD# 7375109" for the early starter and "Support, mounting WO# 804362, ORD# 8328133" for the late starter.

The YF also came in large and small SAE flange sizes and was found on both the L134 and F134 civvy models. You will need the smal SAE flange YS637S for your M38's L0134 engine.

Finally, I attempted to add a picture of the PCV system on my jeep but couldn't figure out how to do it. Any advice?

the early startter support WO 649073 is a hard one to find. Army Jeep Parts ad in the last Suply Line lead one to believe they will be reproducing one in the near future
