For as many times as I have heard Wes say"look it up in the appropriate download, my wealth of knowledge is contained therein" ,I'm dammed if I know HOW to acccess the mythical information!!Duh. In short, info on a tear down of tie rod ends, re and re and relative. Also good parts source if possible.[/i] _________________ 1953 M38A1...CFR 53-32475

W,
I looked at the parts breakdown in the Ord 9 G740 for the M38,
tore mine down, and ordered parts from Midwest Military.
I'm sure any of the other reliable parts suppliers would have the
parts you need as well.
The toughest part I had was separating the joints. The manuals and experts
say use a pickle fork. Mine were so bad I knew I was replacing them so I
used a pry bar and BFH. Then unclamp the ends and screw them out.
Be sure and measure the distance between the right and left joints so you
can get close to toe in when putting everything back together.!
The civilian manuals have a little more information and I also have
Moses Ludel's book Jeep Rebuilders Manual which I recommend.
Be sure and get the early jeep version.
TM 9-8014 Page 264 thru 275. Pages Page 266 Para 225 thru Page 268 Para 226 covers each tie rod blow by blow and cotter pin by cotter pin.
Here's the magic i use!
The Table of contents is on page 1 & 2 . Run your finger down to page 1 Section XXI. this line will point you to page 264.On page 264 you read para 222 which explains the steering system to you, then Para 223 tells you what user maintenance is authorized, then Para 224 describes setting the toe-in and finally Para 225 starts replacing the tie rods and their ends.
Piece of cake.
As mentioned above your ORD 9 for the M38A1 will give you several good illustrations as well. But more importantly it gives you the Willys part numbers and in some cases the Spicer numbers either of which will get you the part if you google it or use a knowledgeable counter guy at your local auto parts store. _________________ Wes K

Here's how to navigate on this website to the pot-o-gold information: At the top of the page you will find hotlinks to the various sections of the website, click on "Downloads". On the main Downloads page click on "Manuals". Then on the next page you will see a link to "M38A1, M38A1C & M38A1D, M170", click on that and another page opens with manuals for those models. Go down to TM9-8014 and click on that link. The manual will open as a .pdf file (Adobe file). If you don't have the Adobe Reader program on your computer, go to www.adobe.com to get it - its a free download. Once in the manual there is a table of contents, scroll down to the appropriate pages. You can read the pages on-line or download the entire manual to your computer. Then you can print out pages if you wish. I often print out pages to take to the shop - doesn't matter if they get all greasy, I just toss them when done, can always print more. Once you can find your way around in the Downloads section - look around for lots more information. Here's a link to the Manuals page: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=60 _________________ 1951 M38

Thanks,Skyjeep50...and Wes of course, now I've got it! I've been working out of a manual that came with my jeep. 7610-21-848-1570, but I see its dated December 1968, close but no cigar. _________________ 1953 M38A1...CFR 53-32475

You are indeed a wealth of knowledge, thanks for all your assistance, with this info, I've learned there is a right and left thread in the tie rod ends, without making myself crazy on the dismantle! _________________ 1953 M38A1...CFR 53-32475
