Ok if I have the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke the rotor should be pointed at the #1 wire correct? If it is 180 off it will point the other way?

Number one wire could be anywhere on the cap depending on how the oil pump was installed. If the engine was running and you are only checking timing then with #1 TDC on compression the rotor should point towards your #1 wire. Unlike many other distributors that can be installed in more than one position this one only fits in the oil pump (which drives it) one way. So to get her 180 degress out you would have to pull the oil pump and rotate it 180 degrees and then reinstall everything while the engine is still sitting with #1 TDC on compression. Then you could get her 180 out.

Ok so my distributor wires are opposite of what they are supposed to be. If I understand correctly as long as I know that it is 180 out, but my wires are installed accordingly, when I get ready to use a timing light (12V system, civvy distributor) it doesnt really matter does it?

If the engine already runs and you want to check timing then press on and use your timing light connected to #1 plug wire.

If you can't work out the timing from here let us know what happens and which end of the engine your timing marks are located (Flywheel or front crank pulley)

Timing marks are on the front cover so timing with a light wont be a problem.
