I am contemplating purchasing a m38a1 parts jeep and was wondering if the price is right. It is non-running and untitled. From what I can tell from the pictures the tub has rot looks like it has two good seat frames five good rims possibly good radiator and gas tank, fenders, hood, windshield frame look good all lights present trans and engine are there and appear military. The price is $700 and it is seven hours one way from me which would mean a couple more hundred on top of the seven.

Zeke,
You have a pretty decent list. Figure out how much of that stuff you need, then go out on the Internet and see what it will cost to buy them separately.
If that number is over 900 bucks then you are probably getting a good deal.
I have never bought a jeep that was running and that didn't have body rot. That is part of the fun of a restoration; what is the challenge of getting one already ready to go?
700 is a good deal for a relatively complete 24 volt system, IF you can do the body and engine work yourself. If you plan on paying retail prices for body and engine work, and do not have thousands of $ to spend, then get another hobby.
Does it still have the 24 volt parts? Those are expensive. And a new wiring harness is $800 plus. But I just made one from a $50 M35 harness, so it can be done.
The good part is that anyone can learn to weld and paint semi gloss OD; a 12 year old can do it. And engine work is easy; find a good automotive machine shop to do the machine work and you do the assembly which saves a few $K. _________________ M38 23100 June 51

I already have a '52 a1 that I am restoring but it is missing a lot of parts and the parts jeep appears to have just about everything I need but I am sure the harness is probably toast. I am interested how you made your harness could you explain a little of it to me because I need one. Thanks.

1-Just order an aftermarket 12 volt CJ5 harness for a 55-71 CJ5. ... You can adapt a civvy 12V fuel sender to the M38A1 tank but you .... need to visit other on line boards for 1940-1960's classic car & truck restorer's opinions.

I am just starting a restoration of a 1960 M38A1. ... Will be doing an M38A1 in 12 volt. ... Otherwise, maybe a CJ-5 harness could be adapted?

Here is how you do it in 3 easy steps.
1.Get an M35 harness; just the front one will have enough wire.
2.In you TM is all the numbers you need; All M series vehicles use the same numbers, from 1951 to now; the M35 has useless things like turn signals, etc. Those are your wires for the rear. Get some wiring harness tape; NOT adhesive backed electrical tape; that won't work. I used silicone tape which will last forever. It sticks to itself; no adhesive.
3. It will be Packard ends; if you don't want that, order some Douglas ends and connectors from MM.
4. Get a Douglas crimper; can't do this without one. 4 stab type.
5. Lay out your old wire (I didn't have one) and find the number that matches it from the M35 harness. OH, take off all the tape first.
6. Make the new wire look like the old one.
7. Keep doing that. It will make you crazy but do not despair; one wire at a time.
8. If you want an ammeter instead of a voltmeter, you have to make #8 and 9. Just be patient.
Ok, 7 steps. Maybe 20, but you get the idea. My M38 works perfectly. _________________ M38 23100 June 51

So I picked up the parts jeep it turned out to be a '52 like mine. It has all of the 24v components which I may keep but the rest will be parted out. The tub is rough except the cowl area and the rear wheel tubs. Has a good d/s seat frame fenders are not bad the leading edges of the fenders will need a little welding to fix a split in the metal but from what I see there is no rust through. The frame looks good also has five rims in nice shape except for the normal bend here and there.
