and where are the informationn on a willys motor
what I should I check if I buy a hold motor if i can't start it
depending on what model of jeep you are talking about, there will be a serial number found somewhere on the block. for example, one of my jeeps has the serial stamped behind the water pump . at first, i didn't see it, but with a few hits with the wire brush, there they were. on other models there is a raised flat boss, which i think is located on the distributor side of the block. once you find these numbers you can post them here and someone should be able to desipher them for you. there are also casting numbers located at the bottom of the block which may be of some help. since you and i are both canadian, there is also one more thing to keep an eye out for, and that is a small metal tag located on the destributor side of the block, which says RCEME REBUILT, and following that the specifications of the rebuild. in some cases an engine would have been rebuilt with new parts and no machining required, while in others, you will see oversized bores, and a fair ammount of work relating to the crank journals, and conn rods.
as for things to look out for with a non running engine, everyone is different, but here is what do.
first off, any engine that is a non runner can only be considered for parts or rebuild, because there is no way to tell is there are any internal problems. the first thing i do is grab the pulley and see if the engine is free. can you rotate the engine through one revolution? then, pull the dip stick to see if there is some form of fluid in the pan. if you see water, or a beige sludge, then water has been introduced into the engine, and you can expect some form of dammage. one more important thing to keep in mind is that if the engine has been sitting outside, and water is found in the pan then some freezing may have occured causing cracks in the block. again, nothing is for certain until you tear the engine down, but at the least, you should be able to salvage some parts.
