I filled the cooling system yesterday only to find this morning a coolant leak which appears to be coming from the water pump so I guess I will have to replace it. So are all pumps the same in quality are some better than others are there some to avoid? _________________ 1952 M38a1 |

As far as good bad or better pumps all I can say is you get what you pay for. Most large auto parts Chain stores can find several different brands for you. Usually the key is the price for quality. Place of manufacture is your next qualifier.
A word of caution. Read the manual carefully about how to transfer your pulley to the new pump shaft. Take your time and do not load the pump shaft too much. _________________ Wes K

My experience with a water pump/pulley was with the belt alignment. The pulley on the replacement pump stuck too far forward (so much so that the back groove on the water pump aligned with the front groove of the generator). I could not press it on far enough for proper alignment. What I don't remember is if I was able to replace pulleys and get better alignment or if I just replaced with different pump/pulley.
My advice would be stick with the reputable military jeep parts dealers who know about the alignment issues with the double pulley on the water pump.

You can find replacement pumps both with and without pulleys. So weather you are using a press or vice for transferring your old pulley to your new pump or adjusting the new pump's pulley position be sure to support the pump housing directly behind the shaft while loading the pumps shaft with vice or press pressure to move the pulley. _________________ Wes K

Thanks everyone for your advice. I ended up ordering a pump from Walcks and it comes with a pulley which I assume is already installed. |

Hey Zeke.. You didn't say whether you were running the dbl belt pully or not. If you are you will probably find that your new pump's dbl pully is a 1pc cast pully. These cast pullys have a slightly narrower belt spacing than the orig style steel pullys. That's why guys will press their orig steel pully onto their new pump. I have pics of the differences in my album but forgot how to post them..
