Hi all "
Recently joined , real good site , my Questions are , while cleaning under
tub I came across tyer pressure stencils on inner wheel wells
My jeep has 3 breakers on battery box side next to all the gauges and you
can see where there was one more on the inside of dash ? I all so found
tyer pressure 28 psi on top of wheel arch , found hood number and star
Hood Number is 20909989" Date Delivered 4/52" ser number 62693"
Half way through rebuild ime going for as close as poss to original so
do I paint tyer pressure on inside (I allso found remains of numbers on
inner front wings) of rear wheel wells and inner front wings or go for
the out side of the front and rear wings , is it all so correct to have these breakers and the one on inside of dash pannel, reading about the breakers
Ime confused as to weather it should or not have these ? All so found a small
Screw on jack plug thingy under dash to one side ? Put me right _________________ Murray, UK, M38
I second getting the book. A wealth of information.
Your M38 had the three plus one circuit breakers. The one on the gauge panel disappeared as of s/n MC65043, in 4/52. the other three disappeared starting on MC65928, again in 4/52. _________________ '52 Dodge M37, '42 GPW, '48 FrankenJeep CJ2A/M38, '50 CJV-35(U), '51 M38, '42 WC-57 Command Car, '44 WC-51 Weapons , (2) M1941 Sperry 60" Anti-Aircraft Searchlights, John Deere M-gator, '44 White M3A1 Scout Car

Welcome to the site MooBoo! Great to hear a UK based M38 is getting a proper restoration from a person that cares about the details... I lived in Blighty for 11 years, and sympathize with you parts availability. And after Boris's speech last Sunday, it isn't clear to me if you are allowed to go into your own garage to work on the M38!
Regarding the Numbers and lettering, IMO, I would document what you are finding well with photos, and duplicate them on your finished product. There were a lot of variations carried out by motorpool mechanics, so keep it as you found it, if you can document it!
Cheers, Jeff

Also worth it's weight, is the US Government printing of the "list of All Service Parts". This big volume is 400+ pages with every part listed by number, and usually a good exploded drawing of the part to give it context as to where it goes. It also will help you here on the forum when taking about a certain part number or assembly.
There is a PDF file located here on the forum, but you can't beat a paper copy for reference and clarity. See if you can find a used original in the UK. The reprints are not quite as sharp as the originals, and are expensive too.
And don't miss all the photos and reference notes and drawings in Wes Knettle's annotated album:
Hi again "
Thanks for the information, have took loads of photos of original stenciling
My first jeep was a May 42 script , 4yrs it took to restore drove it to
Normandy for the 75th anniversary, did 1500 miles in one week , I drove to work all winter one year snow , gales , floods , frost , gear box in my landy
(Land Rover) had gone so the jeep was pressed back to work , over here
they think the Land Rover is the best (proper Land Rover not those flash
Chelsea tractors) it is good I drive one as every day driver but the jeep
Is the daddy of em all , _________________ Murray, UK, M38
I automatically think original from factory. Original from factory did not have tire servicing stencils or underhood servicing stencils. Nor any stars. They left Willys/Kaiser with hood numbers. As mentioned above the variations in markings used throughout the US military service units is very large.
If you review our Downloads Page you'll see our data bases there. The M38 data base list many production changes by serial number as does the ORD 9 SNL G-740 parts manual. Try to use these tools and manuals in your research.
The Aux Power Receptacle in the firewall you mentioned was discontinued at MC47771. The CB on the back of the instrument cluster was discontinued at MC65042. The 3 CB's you mention on the battery box inboard side were discontinued at MC65927.
Good morning wes "
Hope you read this in the morn as I think it is night time with you morning
With me , so should mine have these items fitted " I ment to have said close to what it was like once it hit the barracks in USA no history with factory

Was , it's a army truck it's how it should be " tidy but tells a story "
Will do some studying on your pages , I would really like that coveted book
But over here no chance , thanks murray _________________ Murray, UK, M38

I read my green M38 Restoration book once a week as a refresher.
But i have to say, if you found a sticker or mark saying anything about Tyres, i guarantee you it is not original to the jeep or the US Army. _________________ M38 23100 June 51

Hi mate "
Don't quite understand your reply , was it about my tyer pressure Question
If it was look at my photos you will see my question in green and white
stenciling, some thing else would like to know more about , I had to jeeps now the first was a May 42 script ford and the one I have now m38 and both had
been black tard or bitumen sprayed from a very early date in there life's
You can tell that by the condition of the original OD Finnish and the fact the
tyer pressure stenciling is still very much fresh , readable and I found tyer
pressure stenciling on the top of the outer wheel arch , my jeep had all the
signs of having a radio fitted ie holes in the top of drivers side wheel tub
the long cable cover going across the rear floor ,holes in the passenger side
wing for snorkel pipe clamp etc , one of my questions is did the army paint
all jeeps black bitumen or just the ones that had snorkels fitted or what _________________ Murray, UK, M38

I think the first comment above was referencing the use of the Englander version of TIRE TYRE as a decal or stencil that the US Army would not have used on their jeeps. They would have stenciled TIRE. I assume it was in jest or humor. _________________ Wes K

I do not recall the US Army painting undercoats of any kind on their jeeps. Of course I was never stationed in Europe during my military time 1966-1989 so they may have over there. The USMC did it on a routine basis. Post a photo of your dash plates.
I did spend 6 weeks April/May 1972 at RAF Marham at Kings Lynn and was fortunate enough to spend a weekend as the guest of an RAF Victor crew chief in London and he made sure I got the full foot tour of London. Fist time I ever rode in a "Mini" as well. I was a B-52G Bomber crew chief back then. Great time, wonderful people. _________________ Wes K
