Ok here are the problems I am having with my 52 m38. The egine has been completly rebuilt along with fuel pump and Carb.

Engine starts and idels well

Hesitates a lot when you press the gas pedel

Does puff a little black smoke

Engine surges, untill it gets up in RPM

Wont go over 30 mph

I have just installed new plugs, the wires are good. Any ideas what I should check?

Does run well just doesnt accelerate, and does not have the power I feel it should. The more I have driven it the better is has gotten howerver.

My engine puffed a little the first few times after it was rebuilt. Seems to have stoped now. I think yu need to run them and get them up to operating temp. for a good wile to let everything seat in.

Hesitation off idle is normally either ignition centrifugal advance inop, accelerator pump diaphram bad (or wrong spring in it) (or spring on wrong side of diaphram. The original manual drawing shows the spring in the wrong place).

The black smoke also points to a high float setting or a metering rod problem from a bad diaphram or wrong spring or wrong metering rod.

I have the corrected illustration here:

I will see if I kept the rebuild kit and try changing out the rods. Of course when I find a new job I may just order a new carb.

I think I have decided that I need to buy a rebuilt carb and see if that fixes the problems. It however it going to have to wait for awhile. Also the fuel pump that I had then and now rebuild is leaking, it has a small pin hole by the inlet side in the case itself, when I sent it to them it did not leak so I need to call and see what they will do.
