My 67' M38A1 started and ran well 2 weeks ago on first start of season. Yesterday, after 2 weeks of rest I started the jeep and it started well. After running for 1-2 minutes it started to sputter, misfire, hesitate, idle low and finally died. It restarted but again died. After several restarts, hesitation it finally died. I took out the military manual and looked under the quick trouble shooting guide and under cranking, starting followed by hesitation, misfire and stalling only two areas came up. Check fuel (full tank of fuel) and check coil. So, I replaced the coil and tried to restart but the jeep cranked but did not start. I then put in a second new aftermarket coil but it too cranked but did not start. I then checked the fuel pump by disconnecting the fuel line after the filter (just before the carb) and cranked the engine-fuel energetically spurted out into a container. So, are the aftermarket coils bad? Or is there another issue that I have not addressed? I have had the jeep since 2017 and after 5000 miles of trouble free starting & running I never had this starting issue. The jeep has been restored from 2009-2011 which included carb and fuel pump rebullds. The jeep is always parked in a locked garage so I am assuming that no animals have hidden in any air intakes as I do have a full military snorkle kit.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. lk
Try first Ohm'ing out the coils both room temp & hot then post those results here.
Check for 24V power at the disconnected end of the power lead # 12 at the distributor housing end, at the inlet pin on this connector and the Plus terminal on the distributor coil. _________________ Wes K

Hi wesk...its been a while....anyhow, although I have replaced my rad, brakes, wheel bearings, steering wheel and other mechanicals.....I have never diagnosed electrical components....I have no clue what Oming is...I assume its to check the oms but I have no clue as to how a multi-meter tester works....that said, all diagnostics aside, if you have any idea as to what parts electrical or mechanical (carb or fuel pump) can make a jeep start and run fine one week and start but not run another let me know as I have a ton of replacement parts including extra coils, points/condenser/plugs etc....the jeep has started very well and run like a swiss clock for 5 years and now this. So, either someone walks me through the use of a multi-meter or you can take you best shot at diagnostics based on my issue and I will replace parts and let you know if it works.
Again, you have helped me several times from 2017 to 2019 and for that I am very thankfull.
The real issue with trying to troubleshoot by swapping parts is you can easily end up with a completely overhauled jeep that still has the same problem. This is especially true if your replacement parts are not actually BRAND NEW!
Without seeing exactly what you are working with advice becomes a hit and miss thing. My suggestion is to find an auto-electric troop or shop near you and get hands on / over the shoulder help. _________________ Wes K

Hi Wesk....I do have the military shop manual and will read throught the electrical part and try to cordinate it with your attached diagram...I will also buy a multmeter to start the testing procedure....I have always been timid in electrical diagnostics ever since I fried a finger trying to diagnose an electical issue on a 1974 Dodge Swinger.
Be extra careful with your 24V system. The heat & pain is much higher!!!! _________________ Wes K
