What is the correct part number for the wiper motor for a M38A1? I see the main PN is SK527 however I see several variants. SK527-16, SK527-2, SK527-22, etc? The last digit(s) appear to change, I don't see this clearly defined in the ORD-9. All of the motors externally appear to externally similar from pics online.
The ORD 9 only list the original early wiper motor (introduced on the M38 but still approved for use on the M38A1/M170) and the superseding wiper motor (originally used on the MB/GPW's in WWII) re-introduced on the M38A1.

Curious that the ORD9 shows two motor part numbers (yes, superceding) but the quantity of each is one.
Searching some old posts seems to suggest the M38A1 ("early" or "late"?) did use two different motors at the same time --- with the passenger side motor having a built-in on/off switch to increase performance of the drivers side motor when needed.
Not clear if this is true or not.
Pretty sure the SK-527-2 is part number G740-7375189 and is correct for the M38 (and listed in the M38A1 ORD9).
I have a pair on my M38.
Pretty sure the SK-527-16 is a M151 motor that has a long output shaft with knurled knob on the end.
Some folks have successfully modified them.
Couldn't find anything on the SK-527-22.
Wiper motors can be expensive muddy water.
Repair parts more so.

The quantities in both listings can be confusing. Depends on the mind set ofthe manual writer. The M38A1C use oneif I recall correctly. The S527-2 is the correct unit for both the M38 & the M38A1 series. The Army supply system realized it had tremendous left over stocks of WWII/Korea stocked S583-1 (500844) units and since they were adequate for allthe Army jeepsback in 1956 they decided to offer them in the M38/M38A1 parts manuals as approved units. Itis just one of those not so often seen backward moves in the ORD supply system.
The original poster still needs to decide what models he has and which models he wants. Either can work on these jeeps but to be original he will need the S527-2. Also repair kits can be even more confusing when trying to order the correct kit.
I personally prefer electric or manual wipers. No sense stealing horse power in nasty road conditions with extremely expensive Vac wiper motors from a 60 or72 HP engine. _________________ Wes K

The listing said "last one" so I bought first, and am asking questions later. I need at least one wiper since the shaft of one on my windshield had either rust to twisted off prompting the need for a different ( new) motor.
If I need to plumb in a inline shutoff for the passenger side that isn't a problem....I can just add 1/4" lawntractor plastic fuel shutoff valve in the rubber vacuum line without making any modifications to the jeep.
Lastly....I could go electric or manual, however I doubt that I would ever be driving the jeep in the rain other than just a passings shower. My taste is to try to keep it original style

Good price!
That SK527-22 looks like the -16 (M151) wiper motor --- except the output shaft looks shorter --- which might be a good thing.
Won't have to shorten it to fit so the windshield will still lay flat without interference (hitting the hood).
Still need to remove the knurled fitting off the end of the shaft and thread it for the acorn nut.
Not hard to do.
Also need to reverse the manual handle (I think the M38A1 is on bottom not top).
Simple roll pin holds it on.
Several threads talk about the mods needed.
Be careful, the body is cast pot metal.
Lawn tractor valve would look goofy, skip it.
What wipers do you have on it now?
Which side will you use the new one on?

What wipers do I have.....lol...well i am not totally sure; they are custom. I am cheap. The arms were from a $1 table at a general antique car swap meet.; they were too long so I cut them down and reshaped them to fit, if I had to guess they were for an old Chrysler or a Nash. I think the wipers I have are a vintage 60's trico winter wiper, from the same table. When I put them all together it was more for looks than functionality.
I'll likely put the new wiper on the driver side since it will be new and hopefully more functional than the original motor
When wiper performance is an issue it's a sign you need to get your hands on a quality vacuum gauge set, engine compressor tester and an engine leakdown tester, this will allow you to start your troubleshooting at the beginning. Yes the Beginning is the vacuum source which is the the intake valves, the intake manifold, the plumbing and the vacuum pump half of the fuel pump.
Either of these VAC testers will work
This set will work for straight compression tests and cylinder leakdown checks.
Once you establish all the leading fundemental system requirements are being provided satisfactorily then lubricating the wiper motors is next. Still no improvement then a wiper motor overhaul is needed. _________________ Wes K
