I added a photo to my gallery on this web site (Gary Keating)of what I believe is the correct jack and handle for the M38 -A1-170 series jeeps. I have references of this being the correct jack in an older portrayal Press manual by Dennis Spence which is a good manual for cross referencing vehicle parts and accesories. I have seen several variants on this jack and handle. Handles with only two sections, and jacks with different style top section ie: bigger foot, t-style top, etc. Any polite opinions welcome.
These tools are only referenced in the ORD 8's and 7's. I thought it a bit odd the M38A1's TM 9-2320-208-20P only listed special tools. These items were drawn from the Military Supply System when the jeeps were asigned to a unit and usually assigned the kits by registration number. Some units did not install tool kits, spare tires, gas cans or pioneer tools until a jeep had a need to leave the post or garrison area. Therefore any tool displayed in a M38 or M38A1 or M170 would need to be from a mil spec tool supplier on the DOD procurement books during or before the period in it's service history the jeep is suppose to represent. I know that's a bit picky but that's the tough answer.
Any photos would be adequate to ID one manufacturer's tool but would not be an exclusive representation since many suppliers were available. _________________ Wes K
