$104,500 for an 1951 M38

Post by jeepers52 »

I live in Arizona and just saw a 1951 M38 sell for $104,500 at the Barrette Jackson auction in Scottsdale Arizona. It was very pretty but not very correct in many ways. It had some bells and whistles that did not all make sense, but it was fun. That has to be some kind of a record for a military jeep, and it is not even a WWII Jeep. Hang on to your old machines they are getting to be worth a lot more than you think.I

Its not a record for a Military jeep. An M38,I'm sure, but I am pretty positive Jeff Polidoro sold his Pygmy pilot model for $275,000.00 just a few years back. Shawn

$104k

Post by TomM »

I would feel bad if I sold my M38. But for $104k I would get over it very, very, very quickly.

Well unless there's a $90,000 gold bar laying under the seat it just goes to show you there is at least one ignorant fish in every body of water on this planet! 8O

Looking at the photos, I guess I could live withthe things wrong with the jeep...

Rifle rack mounted verticle beside the seat as opposed to being mounted on the windshield...

Antenna brackets wrong... the MP-50 mounting bracket is used as an antenna bracket on the passenger side and not MP-50 on the other side. so forget using the trailer receptacle id it is there...

Front lifting shacles one early and one late...

I am not familiar withthe mounting of the .30 on the front dash...

But I could part with mine for $104K

I would hope that a record selling M38 jeep would be a better example.

Wrong tires, etc, etc, etc.

I am not going to nit pick it, but I will certainly say that the jeep on ebay is not worth near $59,000 and at Barrett Jackson there are too many impulse buyers with lots of money.

If someone did just a little research (get a manual and look at the photos) then you could tell a lot. The people that have restored this jeep and the ebay jeep obviously don't know much about them.

I guess they figure by putting on a couple of machine guns that it ups the value %500.

That ebay jeep has been "Buy it now" for $59,000 for almost a year with no takers.

Gentlemen: Let's have some fun here and see how many things we can find wrong with this jeep. It will be like the test your powers of observation tests at the back of people magazine.

This is what I found:
1. wrong tires, not NDCC.
2. no rear lifting shackles.
3. no rear reflector on spare tire.
4. wrong exhaust system
5. Wrong rear antennae mount.
6. Front shackles don't match.
7. Siren too high/big.
8. Hood blocks not stock. Higher, so windshield will clear siren.
9. Wiper motors mounted upside down.
10. Invasion stars.
11. Someone mentioned, no emergency brake handle?
12. What about the paint color? That is an argument all it's own!
13. Wrong/ Home made machine gun mounts.
14. The watercooled Browning looks like it has some 50 cal parts!
15. Radio headphones on passenger seat are wrong era.

What else. Does anyone else see something I missed?

Have fun,va :)

Regards to all you guys,

As far as I know, I own the earlest production M38 known to exist. It is MUCH more correct than THAT. I wonder what it would be worth?

Hmmmmm.

Nope... think I will hold onto it for a few more years...

How 'bout the news on Roy Rogers' Nellyebelle CJ2A selling for $116,500? That now puts the tally at 2 for Willys-built Jeeps that have far outsold any Ford GPW on value!!!
