Up close: The Tetons
We rode the chairlift at the Grand Targhee Ski Resort to the top of the hill and got a close up look at the Tetons.

Yes, during July. We got to the Inn dining room about 10 minutes before the crowd arrived. Shortly after the pic was taken, all the tables were full. The shot of the parking lot doesn't show it, but it was full too.Cacti_Ken wrote:Did you take those photos in Yellowstone last month? I noticed there were no other people in the Inn or cars in the parking lot. We were there about 1st of August 2009 and it was really crowded.

I would like to go back to YS next summer after we go to Denver for a veterans reunion. There was alot, we, my wife and I didn't get to see. Maybe I can talk her into taking some camping equipment.
Ha! that would probably mean hauling a trailer which I would have to buy. I wonder if renting a RV would be cheaper. I myself could go the tent route while in YS, and motel it the rest of the the trip.
Dreaming again.....

Tent camping inside the Park is possible. Some places require hard sides only, so check the YNP website for details. Yes, there are bears. But thousands of people camp inside the park every year, and we haven't heard of any campground incidents inside the park recently. Last year's incident by Cooke City was just outside the park boundary. Renting an RV is expensive! I haven't checked lately but in the past I've seen $300-$500 a day!Cacti_Ken wrote:Maybe I can talk her into taking some camping equipment.

Or, consider staying somewhere outside the park and travelling in. Jackson Hole is a neat place to stay, but room rates can be expensive. West Yellowstone is more reasonable. Or someplace farther away, like Ashton, where we stay. I noticed that room rates at the Ashton Inn, a nice, former Super 8 building, were down compared to last season, somewhere in the $60 range. There are also campgrounds at Grand Teton NP and at Flagg Ranch, just outside the YNP south entrance.

Thanks for the pictures and the blog, Jack. The Tetons have a special meaning for me - it's where my future wife and I went on our first major backpacking trip in 1983. We went in from the Idaho side, up to Alaska Basin and Sunset Lake (which lived up to its name), saw South, Middle and Grand from "the back side", and eventually came out past Phelps Lake on the east side. Absolutely gorgeous in the middle of August at 9000ft+, wildflowers in full bloom, and the huckleberries were delicious. I don't normally like going to the same place twice given that there are so many other options to explore, but that's one place I wouldn't mind revisiting one bit.

That's quite hike you made! Glad the blog brought back some good memories for you. The Tetons are special and unique, I never get tired of them. But, what do you mean "back side?" Have you been talking to those folks over in Jackson Hole?RimfireJim wrote:Thanks for the pictures and the blog, Jack. Sure do, and that it involves an A1 makes it even better. Can't wait to read about them.jbjeeps wrote: Glad you liked it! We had a great time in the Tour and enjoyed learning how to put a blog together so we could share it with others. We're looking forward to more travels next summer.
