I have just bought my first M38A1. All the serial numbers have been removed but I have a motor number of md104915 and the numbers on the front bumper are passenger side is 103 BN drivers side is 0 0 PLT that I can tell. Any information that I would get will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeff

There was no effort by Willys to match engine serials to chassis serials so the engine number is no help. Unit markings will also not help nail down a date of manufacturer.

You can complete the survey form and I can try and narrow the DOM down. Getting the dates off the tranny and differential houysings helps a lot.

Top flange of the gear box. Need to have the floor panel open to see it.

Outboard top of axle housing tube. About 5 or 6" from brake back plate.

Hi Jeff,
Do you look for the serial number on the Left Front side of the frame?
See my album "sinrisnekaf" in Photo Gallery page 8, the photo "The location of the Framenumber".

Although Willys made no frame serial stampings on the Post WWII Military jeeps it was not uncommon to find them in the field that had been through a military overhaul facility and sometimes to keep parts together the frames would get stamped with either/and/or the hood number or chassis serial number.

If it helps, the date on my transmission (a civilian one) is located here (just inboard of the clutch cable):

The WWII jeeps were the last to get a frame serial plate riveted to the left front frame rail.

As shown above that's the date you want.

Wesk I guess I will show my lack of knowledge about Jeeps when I asked the second time I was hoping you could tell me which axel housing front or rear left or right the rest of what you said I understand.
