someone else asked about one of those not long ago. can't seem to find it now. it is something to do with radio kit though if I remember right.

From what I can see, that looks like a latch bolt. The arm of service added those to the M38 jeeps to stop the passenger seat jumping forward and having an unfortunate interaction with the windscreen.
I thought the M38A1's had a spring retainer fitted to the body panel side?

The barn door sliding bolt latch is a field addition per MWO ORD G1-W50 Dated 4 OCT 56. The M38A1's produced from about 1965 and up had the spring type catch for the pax seat on the right side.

The Army MWO actually had a part number and that latch was steel.
