OKCM38CDN - '54 M-38A1

Post by OKCM38CDN »

I took a major step today towards formally starting the restoration of the M-38A1 I purchased from a member of the board a couple of years ago. I had been sandblasting and priming minor parts and setting them in boxes to get ready for the full restoration.

I moved the jeep into the garage today and moved the '51 wagon outside under a car cover (it is for sale on another list). I am looking forward to pulling this one apart and bringing it back to life. I have most all of the parts needed to do so.

The major repairs will be the rear floor needs replacement along with the rear panel on the body. A PO replaced it with pain sheet metal and all the braces and such are missing... I will have to replace the hat channels and floors along with some other body work, but they are minor repairs compared to the floors.

I will be posting photos down the road and keeping you folks updated as things move along... Wes, I do have one question for you or Ryan, how can I add an album to my gallery to post photos of this jeep... I would like to keep it separate from my M-38CDN; let me know.

Well folks I will post updates as I can

Thanks

Started filling holes and making patching passenger side cowl to door area...

This is the before photos, will post after photos later...

I did redo the patch at the bottom...

Was going to smooth the area out with bondo to get the minor dings and dents out; then I remembered the tub needs to be blasted before paint...

Now to work on the area from the door to the wheel opening

Have made some more progress on the body - taking it slow... my welding is not super good on sheet metal - practice, practice, practice...

Before the patch... and brace replacement...

Outer skin after patch... Primer is just to keep the surface rust off till the tub is repaired and sandblasted...

New Inner brace where patch was installed...[/img]

Pulled power plant a week ago and separated the bell housing ,transmission and transfer case...

Bell housing was coated inside with what looked like tar... my degreaser would not cut it easily, finally got the worst of it off, tore the transfer case down and only thing needing replacement are the oil seals at this time as far as I can see...

Transmission torn down today, I think I am going to need a gear or two...

Image
This gear has a big wear point, going to see if I can find one locally...

Image
Reverse idler gear is questionable

Comments...
